Pros: Beautiful decor, lovely food and drinks. Amazing river views. Right in the center. Helpful and unimposing staff.
Cons: No sauna or spa!! Absolutely a deal breaker for me. Rooms are not equal, I booked 2 Junior River View Rooms and only one came with a balcony. Doesn't seem fair. Too cold inside the lounge and bar and too many people smoking outside. Despite soundproofing I could hear other guests above (probably just bad luck, normally you should be okay, but those people were really noisy).

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful room with high ceilings and elegant draperies. Staff was friendly and helpful. Wish I got the name of the young woman with dark hair at reception so could pay her a compliment. I saw interact with several guests, she was expressive, at times stepping around the counter to speak with the guest. A natural for the hospitality industry.
Cons: Self-service coffee at breakfast would be nice.
7.9 Good
Pros: The hotel is in a good location, very close to the railway station. Facilities are old, but ok for use.
5.0 Okay
Pros: Convenience
Cons: Hotel NOT safe. Strangers entered the hotel early morning today and stole my luggage from storage room. All captured on CCTV. No contact from hotel manager close to 24 hours from theft incident. Police are investigating. Hotel is too close to the SBB train station which is filled with thieves so the hotel is an easy target. Very unsafe as strangers can just enter the hotel easily and staff are not careful and trained to protect belongings of customers.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff was professional, curteous, multi-lingual, and the front desk was always staffed. The hotel was amazingly generous with coffee, wine and snacks available throughout the day and evening. I also had free access to a computer and internet and a quiet place to settle in and work near the coffee, wine and snacks. A variety of international newspapers and magazines were available as well. Within just a few hundred yards I found the Marketplace, filled with shops, restaurants, and an art museum with an impressive collection of impressionist paintings (my favorite) was also just a 10 minute walk away. Did I mention there was free coffee, wine and snacks?
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location was easily reached from the train station and a short walk to the historic area. Room was excellent and so was the breakfast. Eggs were cooked to order. Free drinks were offered at arrival and one each day of our stay. Free Basel Card allowed us unlimited use of the local transport and discounts at all museums which saved us money. Staff was very helpful, The garden was a delightful place to have a drink.
Cons: There was not much we didn't like. They had some problems with the elevator on a couple days but they offered us free drinks to compensate so we didn't mind. They got the problem fixed soon enough.

Pros: The most beautiful thing about the hotel, is the breakfast garden. Also as a place to enjoy a drink in the evening. The location is great. Is quiet but in the middle of the city.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff was welcoming and friendly and helpful
9.6 Excellent
Pros: I used the offer of the spa included in the hotel. I booked a 25 minutes Shiatsu massage (the first I ever had) which I enjoyed so much that I could - spontaneously - elongate to 50 minutes. The masseur was marvellous and I we had a nice talk after it. He gave me some interesting pointers on my special interests in relation with my business.
Cons: the only very very little (and really NOT important) I thing may have liked would have been cream cheese on the breakfasts buffet.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Convenient location, comfortable rooms, superior breakfast, and an exceptionally friendly, helpful staff.
Cons: I can’t think of a thing.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Food. Breakfast selection. Chocolate.
Cons: Bed too hard and too short.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff at GAIA are wonderful, friendly people who genuinely care about making your stay comfortable and happy. They attended to our two requests promptly and cheerfully. The breakfast buffet is comprehensive, fresh and delicious and served in a beautiful room. Our room was well equipped with comfortable bedding and lovely toiletries. The free mini bar, restocked daily with a variety of treats, is a generous gesture. The location is great. We loved our three nights at Gaia Hotel and would recommend it unreservedly.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location is super convenient Staff in the breakfast room were excellent, very attentive and cheerful! Staff at the desk and housekeeping were very helpful.
Cons: Difficult to operate the A/C.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Great location and exceptional coffee and breakfast...
Cons: My room backed onto an alley way that trucks were parked in at 5.30am with engines idling. Not the hotel's fault at all but if you need sleep best to check where your room is located.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was a fantastic buffet of cereals, fruit, standard hot food and some more traditional Swiss food - great selection all round. Staff were fantastic and very helpful. Room was clean, comfortable but could have done with plug sockets near the bed.
Cons: Nothing to complain about, though there maybe could have been more alcoholic beverages in the fridge on arrival - a solitary beer is a little bit stingey given the price of the room!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: From check-in to leaving, an excellent experience. Hotel is literally across the street from the train station. It's a nice walk to the old town area and the river. And a quick trolly ride back with the included free town pass. Room was large and well equipped. Bath was spotless, well-equipped and with large walk-in shower. Included breakfast was delicious and offered good variety served in beautiful dining room.
Cons: Nothing. This hotel was great.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: I took it when most common know alternatives were not available. I however was very well surprised by the great facilities, breakfast, general cleanness and professional service of the staff. Being right at the train station did make it noisy, but positively convenient to move around the city and other cities.
Cons: Cost was probably too high because of the availability in the days I used it.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very thoughtful staff and great breakfast.

Cons: I don't have any complain at all
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location. Friendly staff. Loved the balcony :)
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Micr in name, but not nature. Great welcome, large room with a/c during the heat wave.
Cons: Nothing, just understand it's not a flash 5 star, and it's a little peripheral, but with the trams, no bother
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Staff were very friendly and very helpful. The service was great. Nice breakfast. I would definitely stay there next time I am in Basel.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly staff. Being picked up from the airport without complaint was very helpful even though it was 10:30pm on a Sunday, following a flight delay. Brilliant and spacious room. Lovely to have a balcony. Also good to have a bath in the bathroom and not just a shower. Kettle was also provided. The Basel card is great for using public transport, including the final transfer back to the airport (combined with initial pickup I therefore didn't spend a penny on public transport all week). Location of hotel wasvvery convenient for everything I needed to do.
Cons: Didn't seem to be able to access English-speaking TV apart from News Channels. I could flick to them (eg Film4) but the screen was blank. Wifi sometimes dropped out. Duvet cover a little uncomfortable for me. Finally: the price was quite high, but not untypical for Basel, unfortunately. None of this would prevent me coming back to this hotel however.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great central location. The staff are incredibly helpful, friendly and speak so many languages! The property is furnished to a superb standard, so much so I'd say it's more like a 4* than a 3*. I got a huuuge room and it was so cheap! The breakfast had a great range of food and loads of yummy local cheese. I'd definitely go back.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The room is large and comfortable, very close to the market and public transportation. Extremely nice and helpful staff. A quick breakfast, caffe and croissant for 5 Franks.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Staff were extremely helpful; the rooms were comfortable; there was a lot choice for breakfast, catering for different tastes/needs including gluten-free options (although we could never quite get the coffee machine to produce decent decaf). Free hot and cold drinks in the lobby were very welcome. It's very close to a bus route (which was ideal for us as we were visiting relatives, but it's not particularly close to the centre of Basel).
Cons: There are not many places to eat locally, just a steak restaurant associated with the hotel and a couple of fast-food places in the shopping centre next door.
10.0 Excellent

Pros: rooms were spacious and so Inviting. we loved the amenities and the services they provided
Cons: I wish the breakfast was included. the Express breakfast was a bit pricey for what was offered

Pros: We really enjoyed our stay in Basel, and had a great meal at the Atelier restaurant. The hotel needs some serious renovations, but it is quite charming, and in a nice neighbourhood. The rooms were basic but very clean. The staff was also polite and friendly. We would stay here again.
Cons: The buffet breakfast is extremely expensive at 33 CHF per person.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A beautiful boutique hotel in a historic location with an excellent restaurant.
Cons: The breakfast started at 07:00, so sadly I had to miss it. The staff could have made something for me to collect. Also, because I had to leave early, reception was closed. Unfortunately, I had to call someone to let me out.. The staff could have shown me how to leave the building the night before
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Had really nice experiance here. Will visit again
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The architecture, decor and amenities of the hotel are all wonderful. Our room was very comfortable and very large. And a very good breakfast.

Cons: Did not find anything.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Location, special building
Cons: No Aircon, narrow & low door to the room, no TV
9.2 Excellent
Pros: A nice hotel with a great location, complemented by an elevator for the descent from the hotel to the city centre. The room is clean. Powerful fan compensated the absence of an air conditioner . Quite enough breakfast in a nice room. Friendly employees. But it is necessary to take into account that the doors to the rooms are very small and in width and height, it may be not convenient for very big people
7.5 Good
Pros: Great location, just off Barfussplatz, easy to reach by tram. There is an elevator from street level right on the square up to reception. But, be aware that there are still several steps up to reach the elevator. Our room had a modern bath with lots of hot water. Bright room ( We booked the superior room.) Overlooking the rooftops to the Muenster. Breakfast was OK with modest choice, would cook eggs if requested. The room had a ceiling fan which would be great on those hot days. Most older hotels do not have air conditioning.
Cons: We were disappointed to find that the lovely terrace we had read about was actually part of the restaurant and therefore you felt compelled to order drinks to sit there or dinner at night. The photos made the room look larger than the reality. There was no coffee maker or fridge ( they were not listed in the description so it was our oversight). People have stated that it was charming. I thought it was nice, but the room was impersonal, so would not describe it as charming. Value for money considered, we would stay elsewhere next time.
6.7 Good
Pros: The rooms we got were not like the pictures on the website - small and cramped. The breakfast was passable. Coffee wasn't all that great - lukewarm.
Cons: Called ahead because we were going to arrive late and arrangements were made for us to gain access to the hotel and to our rooms without someone there to help us. No parking for car.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: This place has a lot of character! Located in the heart of beautiful Basel!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Quaint and perfectly located - the lobby lift took us to the centre of things
Cons: Small round shower let the room down
8.8 Excellent
Pros: It has great and special flair and has perfect internet. The location and the hotel elevator are awesome!
Cons: Rooms are a little dark and very minimal. But I guess it is part of the flair.

Liked the couch. Free chilled and bubbled water and tea at every floor. Ironing room on 3rd floor great idea! Great location, very central and close to tram (Bankverein).
Cons: Breakfast pricey but this price is average for Basel/CH (Swiss is overall pricey). My boyfriend thought the styling was a bit cold (concrete floor in room). Only thin sheets available in room, OK it was summer but bit too cold for me. Some noise from hallway.

Pros: The location was excellent for our two night stay. We easily got everywhere we wanted to on foot. The library was a nice additional space for us, and the hotel room was designed and configured for our maximum comfort.
Cons: It was expensive and the announced "snacks" available in the library were pretty much non-existent. There were not very many restaurants close by, but that isn't a fault with the hotel.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location easy walking distance from everywhere I wanted to go and very close to all transport. Bed was comfortable and shower was great. Adriana was very friendly, helpful and welcoming...perfect host. The room was stylishly minimal and the house is great with a roof terrace. Plenty of breakfast choices to help yourself to.
Cons: No complaints
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The best part about the B&B was definitely Adriana. Her commitment to making sure everyone had a comfortable stay was evident in the way she was looking after the accommodation and guests. My stay was 2 nights and 3 days and had to travel to different cities on 2 days.. it's proximity to direct tram and bus line to main train station made me feel like a local who knew the city transport like a pro! Best part was that the city centre was only 10 minutes walk and the route from B&B to centre was very enjoyable as it included some of city landmarks like Spalentor, main square, etc. Well kept and clean place, toilets were nice (shared but always available). Would definitely stay here again. The room is basic size but it was fine for me as I was alone.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything! Balcony, kitchen and room! I had such a good stay.
Cons: None!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Well located B&B, 3 min walking from the bus line driving directly to the airport. Nice room in an old house with a large area for breakfast, and a roof terrace on the back. The bathroom is to share, but 2 bathrooms for 3 bedrooms is fine.

Cons: A little bit tired
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The host. Location near the tram. The breakfast.

Pros: It rained the day we were there and then hotel provided free transit passes. So we spent the day hopping on an off the local bus and trains. Staff was very helpful. Location was excellent in old town.
Cons: As with all hotels the pillows are terrible. Lumpy and thin.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Convenient location friendly staff
Cons: Clean
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Our luggage didn't arrive with us and the staff went beyond duty to provide us amenities and help with contacting the airlines as we were embarking on a river cruise the next day. The hotel location, staff and the room (the hair dryer was the only full size one we had on our entire trip) were great. It was raining and since our raincoats were in our luggage we definitely appreciated the complimentary umbrellas! We would definitely stay there if visiting Basel again.
Cons: Nothing!
6.3 Good
Pros: Clean room and warm colorful atmosphere. The furniture layout is very conenient and feels modrern despie the old style feel of the building. The bed was very comfortable!
Cons: The room was located close to the elevator so it was a tad too noisy. The staff was not very smiling.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Location and restaurant
Cons: Room was just above street and noisy. Also although clean and attractive a bit “snug”
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent staff. Cleanest rooms I’ve seen in a long, long time. Exceptional location.
Cons: Nothing. I travel for a living and stay in mostly big brand chain hotels all over the world, this rivals all of them for its size.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: room was big, bathroom was clean with a large shower and the bed was very comfortable. Staff arranged for a taxi to pick us up at 4:00 am and a wake up call for 3:00 am. Due to time of day checking out was a problem and we are waiting for a copy of our bill
Cons: checking out at 3:30 am was not easy
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Excellent staff: everyone we met was very friendly and very helpful. Urim was particularly good and greeted us like old friends every time we appeared. A good start to our holiday. The location is very good, on a pedestrian street and near to the Market Place from which it was easy to get FREE trams to just about anywhere. (Free with the Basel card, but no one asked to see it anyway.) Breakfast was excellent in a calm quiet room with superb service for coffee tea etc., help yourself to the buffet. Comfortable beds. Large bathroom with large walk in shower. Non-slip shower mat provided on request.
Cons: The restaurant was far more upmarket than I'd expected and the menu didn't change while we were there, so only ate in it once. Despite being in a pedestrian street, there was a noisy gathering outside two out of three nights. Not the hotel's fault, but somewhat unexpected.
7.9 Good
Pros: Very clean rooms
Cons: Internet was slow and not having constant signal

9.2 Excellent
Pros: Great location near the city center
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Cute hotel and really easy to get to from the train station. Easy walk to all the major sights. We were there for only a short time period but just walked over to the zoo and then we went to the papermill museum - which by the way is fantastic, seriously one of the best museums i have been to. The breakfasts were great and my kid was free - we could choose from a variety of hot or cold items (although she did break into the mini-bar and ate a $5 can of pringles in 3 minutes without realizing how much the minibar items cost - last time i leave her alone to go ask the front desk staff a question).
9.6 Excellent
Pros: This is the second time I have stayed at the hotel and the experience is the same as last time (very good). The hotel staff are friendly and helpful, the local is good and near to the city attractions and restaurants, the room is very nice, comfortable and clean. This is definitely a good hotel for anyone to stay while at Basel.

Pros: Nice, clean hotel close to the center and also the bus/train stations. Room very clean and quiet. Fully airconditioned, wonderful shower room and great gym!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: I loved the value for the hotel - for a very reasonable rate, I was able to get a loft/suite, which included a mini-kitchen. This was so helpful considering my extended stay for work. I also loved the location, close to multitude of restaurants, shops and nightlife, it can't be beaten. Finally, the gym is very well equipped, with modern fitness equipment, which is a high priority for me. Staff was also very friendly and helpful during my stay.
Cons: While many staff members were well-informed, polite, and helpful, there were a minority who were not.

Cons: We couldn’t figure out how to run the air conditioner. The windows were open so we thought that was it. Later we were told that the windows had to be closed in order to operate. It might be helpful for instructions for foreign visitors.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very comfortable beds. Excellent breakfast with the best scrambled eggs I have tasted. We made good use of the hotel bicycles which were ideal for exploring the city and outlying area. The staff were pleasant and helpful.
Cons: We had to close the bedroom window because guests in rooms below smoked on the balconies and the smell drifted upwards. The room was perhaps a little dated but was very comfortable and clean.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: the breakfast, the view, the bed, the staff, the cleanliness!
Cons: The location is nice and central and has. great view on the river, but with that comes the noise of the riverside and the bridge.

Quite compact bedroom with comfortable bed, chair and table. Decent size wardrobe. Complimentary soft drinks in fridge in room and at reception. Coffee pod machine. Cons: Beds were very soft from use
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Staff was great, and brought out luggage up when the room was ready. The breakfast items were outstanding! Location was great. Extras, like the Basel Card, very much appreciated.
Cons: Mainly the climate control, or rather the stuffiness, and also lack of any fan in the bathroom. The cost was high. And the food, too, even with a 10% discount.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: In the heart of Basel, we found our stay at Hotel Merian simply magnificent! Every person on the staff, from the front desk, to the dining area, to housekeeping were friendly, most helpful and responsive to every question and need. The taxi and tram are just out the door and the views from the riverfront are outstanding.
Cons: Nothing. However a caution to summer travelers, be advised the property has no AC.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Location, bed & linen, bathroom, breakfast, Beatrice at front desk
Cons: Lack of air conditioning (which we overcame through combination of open window & door & fan).
5.0 Okay
Pros: Very pretty view out the river side.
Cons: NO AIR CONDITIONING! Early Sept. and it was hot. Open window and the noise made it impossible to sleep along with the flys etc. BEWARE! Breakfast was $75.00 USD for 2. And not worth it at all.
