The fact that it was a heritage home but would have been better if the exterior of the house was better maintained . Love the peaceful neighborhood , near a bus stop & some dining places. Easily accessible drive coming from the border.
We were on the 3rd floor such that I had to lug my heavy suitcase over 6 staircases with at least 8- 10 flight of steps each not mentioning the entrance which has about 6 flight of steps. The room smelled musty which means it needs a lot of airing out. A lot of the bulbs in the room were not working. No lights or motion sensor on the front porch when coming home late at night.
There was no breakfast. They said that they had lowered their rates to compensate for no breakfast. Coffee machine broken--had a drip machine. Provided just instant oatmeal packets in dining room--that was all. Don't call themselves a B&B any longer--just Balfour House.
Bed was only 5 ft for 2 people to share--far too small. NO blinds closed in bedroom--woke up at 5 am from the sun light. TV in living room didn't work until last day. No owners showed up ever during our stay. All chandeliers in the entire house had several working light bulbs missing. Given one tiny towel each and minute soap to use in the shared bathroom which was shared by MANY people. Paint outside peeling and rotten. Paint peeling everywhere on the outside of the house. Garden neglected.
Perfect for budget travellers! Balfour House offers good value accommodation for pricey Vancouver but it is not for everyone. It is an old Victorian house which has not been well maintained but would have been quite beautiful in its day. It now has a feel that is reminiscent of shared student housing. It was very nice to have our own bathroom (although toilet paper was sparse), and our corner room had big windows...a couple which opened to make a bit of a breeze. It was nice to look unto trees in this lovely, quiet neighborhood. The shared kitchen had all we needed to cook a few meals, although we had to scrounge for things, light the element with a lighter, and work with the rubbed off indications on the stove. We ate our meals outside on one of the three patio tables in the lovely backyard (sometimes scoring a chair with a cushion and definitely needing to wipe stuff down before use). The location and price point are the selling points for sure. Free street parking is a big bonus too.
A lot of what makes this place good for budget travellers will offend others. There is nothing fancy or comfy/cozy about Balfour House. There is a musty old-house smell, paper is sparse, carpets are stained, kitchen cupboards are a mess, staff is rarely around, bedding isn’t a perfect fit, etc. Still, it has all you need if you can fend for yourself. Note there is no breakfast offered which is indicated on their website (Q&A section, I think). I’d stay here again without hesitation.
No wash basin in toilet so if bathroom was occupied there was nowhere to wash your hands
