Dar Ben-Gacem - Tunis - Building
1
9.2 Excellent (260 reviews)
Overview Reviews

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Second time staying here and just as good. All staff were awesome, building stunning, room comfortable, breakfast and dinner delicious, cooking lesson really fun. Thanks! Hope to be back again!
7.1 Good
Pros: The traditional house is charming and nicely decorated
Cons: The extra dinner was overpriced
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The building, terrace and the rooms are amazing, incredibly cosy and comfortable, with very nice local interiors. Central location, right in the heart of the Medina. Tasty breakfast and very kind and helpful staff. I was sorry to go!
Cons: The ride from the airport wasn't great - our flight was late and the taxi driver sent by the hotel was very angry at us (and every other driver on his way, stopping to shout at an old lady too).
9.0 Excellent
Pros: - very nice building - nice room - the staff helpful and available to suggest restaurants or tour or taxi. All the member of the staff except one are giving nice suggestions. - nice breakfast
Cons: - the shower holder was broken - I suggest you to do the tour of dougga because it is very nice, but not accept the extra price for extra stops in other towns. It is not valuable and there is nothing to see. - the medina is nice bus it is difficult to find a restaurant after 16.00. There are only a couple of it in that area and you will have to take a taxi to go to other restaurants.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: This is a very special and different location and definitely a place to stay. It has local couleur and you can imagine what life in the medina was like centuries ago. Also, being in the medina is simply fantastic (strolling the sites and shopping if you have time during the day) and surprisingly very quiet. The staff is extremely friendly. Any wish you may have, they will try to fulfill. I came back late one night from work and would have liked a glass of wine. The receptionist went out and bought a very nice bottle and prepared a cheese platter for me. You feel at home and very welcome.
Cons: The bathroom in my room is in urgent need of renovation. Also it needs a fixture for shower, a glass door to the bath tub to avoid inundating the (otherwise lovely) bathroom, a glass where you can put your toothbrush. It is really a shame, if things are not maintained. Give it a coat of paint would already mitigate the sense of neglect. I only complained to late, would have been given another room otherwise. However, I had a quick look in the bathrooms of the other rooms. One is tiny, the other has a shower you can hardly turn around in. Having said this, nevertheless, I would stay here again. I would just make sure I get the room with the best bathroom :-)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The room was so beautiful. So spacious and grand. The hotel offered pickup and dropoff at the airport, at very reasonable prices. They made us a packed lunch for our trip to Douz. The breakfeast was amazing: Fresh bread, coffee, freshly squeezed orangejuice, and fluffy omelet. Best stay, and such a wonderfull service. Tea in the courtyard was so nice.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff could not have been more helpful. We were able to ask for tea for ourselves and visiting friends and this always came with a plate of sweet biscuits. The breakfast was absolutely fantastic. The room decor is wonderful (we stayed in three different rooms on several occasions and all of them were just knock out amazing).
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The location could not be better: In the middle of the Tunis Medina, yet a peaceful and tranquil place. The decor and furnishings of the hotel are tasteful. There is a beautiful roof terrace and courtyard. The service staff are very attentive, helpful and amicable. The breakfast was ample and filling. My room was very clean including the bathroom. Spotless.
Cons: My room was nice but not very practical. I had no desk. The garden table which was provided instead was helpful but still a makeshift solution. There was not much daylight in my room. This may be good in the heat of the summer. But in wintertime some sun light would have been nice. This comment, however, cannot be generalised as the rooms are of different design.

2.0 Mediocre
Pros: Only good view.
Cons: The bathroom and toilet are separated from the bedroom and are shared with other guests. So I had to lock the room when I use them. The guest house itself and every item are very old. The drain pipe is very smelly. There is no telephone, no TV, no refrigerator and so on in the room. When I asked the Wi-Fi password and other questions, I had to use mobile. A window frame sounds on a windy day. The key part of the door frame is broken and does not close securely. It's like a back packer's house in spite of €70/night. They didn't provide a face towel. I guess they don't have a habit of washing their backs.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Absolutely beautiful, tranquil, great setting, right on beach, great location, breakfast wonderful, loads of bathrooms, balconies amazing, views incredible. Quiet and peaceful. Tastefully decorated. Loved it all
Cons: I can't think of anything at all that I didn't like. It was totally amazing
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The location and property itself are amazing. Right on the beach, and a short walk to the main road or to the light rail stop, so it's easy to get to the sights in Carthage and to Sidi Bou Said. Facilities were nice, there was a communal kitchen to use. Pool and garden were nice as well. Breakfast was good.
Cons: Check-in/arrival time seemed more flexible than it is, and the doorbell doesn't seem to work very well. The wifi didn't work well while we were there, but it appears we were subjected to unlucky timing more than any fault of the owner.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I loved staying at Dar El Maa. It's beautifully designed, located right on the beach and with easy access to both downtown Tunis and Sidi Bousaid/ La Marsa, its owners are welcoming and easy-going, the pool is awesome, and there's even a very cute and quiet dog.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast is great and quantities more than enough. Nice location by the gulf.
Cons: Road in this part of the city are not well maintained. Need to watch where you put your foot.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: That home give me trust of my tunis trip I love the sea view from my balcony the breakfast was delicious the house keeper really lovely
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Loved the location and the hosts were AMAZING

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Roland & his brother were the friendliest staffers one could imagine. The house is beautifully restored and one feels sheltered and pampered at the same time. We walked everywhere from there. Despite oe feels initially overwhelmed being in the Medina and all the small streets, it is very safe. Nearly all streets are marked. Take a cell phone picture of the map in the lobby so you can always check where you are when you feel lost.
Cons: The WiFi was a bit spotty. Don't know if it was the modem or the service supplier 'ooredooo'.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Dar Traki is in a gorgeous traditional house. It is sparkling clean, very comfortable and cozy. The great breakfast is served in a beautiful courtyard. The staff definitely brings your stay to a very high level.
7.0 Good
Pros: Very well restored historic house in the heart of the Medina. Very clean room, spacious enough even if not huge. Silent and comfortable overnight. Receptive personnel, meeting a special request on the day of my departure and proving flexible in adjusting my initial reservation at no extra cost.
Cons: No hair drier in the room. Relatively underwhelming breakfast for the price. Difficult to find, but that's to be expected in the Medina.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Location, nice staff
Cons: Light, Design
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Charming ancient Medina grand home, modern facilities with all the original features around open courtyard
Cons: Nothing
7.9 Good
Pros: This is a great location in the Medina. It’s v quiet. The courtyard in the hotel is lovely. The reception from all the staff (both the staff) was friendly. We stayed in the winter and despite the cold weather, the room was warm.
Cons: We arrived late, and the hotel is very hard to find in the Medina. That said 2-3 local people were incredibly friendly and guided us there. While our room was nice, the shower was not great and without a shower curtain you had to hold the shower head above you to avoid a flood. The wi-fi is poor and worked only intermittently.

Cons: Just every thing is perfect
8.0 Excellent
Pros: We liked the location -- there are restaurants and cafes nearby, and the medina and other sites are walking distance. The breakfast was quite extensive, and there is an espresso machine with various options (much better than the instant coffee we got at other hotels!). We had dinner at the hotel one night, and it was good. The hotel helped us arrange local transportation and a day trip. We liked that the room was clean and non-smoking (although the rest of the hotel is rather smokey).
10.0 Excellent

Overview Reviews
Located in Sidi Bou Said, Dar Fatma is within a 15-minute drive of Palais Ennejma Ezzahra and St. Louis Cathedral. Featured amenities include dry cleaning/laundry services, a 24-hour front desk, and luggage storage.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Very nice staff , gentle and kind. The location is also very good, easy access. Breakfast is also good served at the table with plenty of delicious options.
Cons: Our room was close to the main entrance what we heard some noise during the night, when new guests arrived. Nothing serious or annoying, it is just a remark.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic location near the lighthouse in beautiful Sidi Boussaid. We had a nice room overlooking the fishermen cemetery and the sea. Breakfast was good and varied. The rooftop is amazing.
Cons: We had no light in the toilets for two days. Not ideal... The bathroom was tiny and there is nowhere to put your toiletries. The little tub on the rooftop is more a pigeon pool than one for humans; so didn't feel like trying it.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: It is a very authentic hotel,if you want a real adventure feeling local atmosphere and culture, this venue is great choice With fantastic panoramic view, nice breakfast and very friendly personnel
9.2 Excellent
Pros: It was exactly as described, nice and simple accommodation, scrupulously clean. Staff were brilliant, couldn’t do enough to make our stay comfortable.
Cons: Be aware this property is at the top of a hill that will be testing for those less mobile
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Location is very good
Cons: Hot water is limited
7.9 Good
Pros: Calm and beautiful place with nice and helpful staff.
5.8 Okay
Pros: The authentic feel of an Arabian courtyard house was obvious. The place is run by a family and the ladies are lovely. The room with our view is lovely - we stayed in Mouna and so we had a window with a tree and the med sea. However, any of the other rooms would only have a view of the graveyard or no window at all if on the ground floor.
Cons: They advertised as having a pool. There is not a pool. It is a small area with water where you could sit and be submerged from knee down for two persons max. The “pool” was not cleaned with bird poop everywhere.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: This is an interesting authentic house with nice roof terrace, but the basin pool is very very small. The house is located almost in the center - the room is very small but cosy. The staff is very friendly but almost do not speek English - only French
Cons: Location is by the cemetery (( This house is not so easy to find and to get in ))

9.0 Excellent
Pros: It’s a traditional hotel, the stuff are friendly.
Cons: It is difficult to find it
7.9 Good
Pros: Good accommodation located in the Medina of Tunis. There is heating in the rooms, which is hard to find in Tunisia (at least in the south), and the rooms are also very spacious. The accommodation also offers several tours and transfers which is nice.
Cons: Maybe a bit difficult to find, but you should be fine either with gmaps or asking the locals. The person at the reception was sometimes not there, and you need him to open the front door.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: nice location in the medina, close to goverment square and the souq. Rustic feeling with the old pation and a nice terrace. Really helpful and friendly staff.
Cons: Since I have small kids I notice the cleaning really quick since they like to discover everything, eg crawling under bead.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Extremely nice and helpful staff, excellent location. Nice decorations. I was very satisfied with my stay.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A wonderful hotel in the Tunisia city center, traditional interiors, a large patio where guests gather and where there is always something to talk with guests from all over the world, have delicious croissants for breakfast, a terrace with a view of the Medina, in a word -- a super homely atmosphere. The guys from the reception will always help with advice on where to go, what sights to see, or talk about what is pleasing. If you want to feel the atmosphere of the old city, be in a comfortable home atmosphere, meet people from all over the world -- just choose a Dar Ya hotel. Thank you guys!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is a lovely hotel in the centre of the medina. Its is beautifully decorated. The rooms have heating so the property is warm which is needed at this time of year! The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and a lovely breakfast was included. Very happy with everything.

9.0 Excellent
Pros: We visited Tunis in November and stayed here three nights. The location of this hotel (riad style, like in Morocco) was right in the middle of the medina, which we loved! We had a gorgeous room (with heating if needed for the mild winter). The bed was very comfortable, the shower decent and it was quiet at night despite the hotel having many other guests when we stayed. The room was cleaned on a daily basis. The breakfast, which was included, was copious and so yummy. The staff were all so lovely. And we could leave our luggage here on our last day. Definitely recommend, if you're looking to be in/around the medina area. And general advise for Tunis: we recommend staying either in the Tunis medina area or around Sidi Bou Said/Carthage (beautiful)!
Cons: It is true what some have observed: the medina is very quiet and some alleys are unlit at night, and as a single woman, this might be somewhat uncomfortable. We were two, so we felt OK!
6.3 Good
Pros: Great location in Medina -walking distance to the major landmarks.
Cons: Bed was located in an elevated area with 4 steep steps. It was a small area and quite unsafe. You have to walk with your luggage through Medina to get to the hotel as no cars can enter. A staff member met us at the taxi stop after our taxi driver called the hotel.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: STAFF WERE THE BEST!
Cons: Everything was great but would love to see some variety in Breakfast!
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Its location in the heart of the medina was a definite plus. The staff was kind and courteous throughout.
Cons: In general, the overall standard of cleanliness could have been higher - cutlery was often not properly cleaned. But otherwise, it was ok.
6.2 Good
Pros: No information provided by front desk for breakfast.
Cons: Train staff to communicate in basic English and Spanish, not everyone speaks French.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: I got a room right in front of the courtyard. Very authentic and beautiful. Room was clean and cosy. The laundry service was impressively fast. if it’s too late into the night. The hotel is very near a really nice spa and famous Tunisian restaurant.
Cons: It turns dark pretty early at about 5.30pm and the walkway back to hotel can be quite quiet Cars are not allowed in this walking street so It was rather hard for me to drag my luggage in and out of the hotel to the nearest road for a cab, along the stone pavement which is not luggage-friendly.

Pros: Fantastic staff! Really helpful in organizing ad-his birthday party and very dedicated in answering all questions first time tourist could have
Cons: Could have more variety of breakfast, for someone staying a week, having exactly the same 10-dish breakfast can be frustrating Could consider other taxi partner...the taxi serving this hotel is a bit of a ripe off with triple price and bad car condition (no air con)

Cons: Few, if any, vegetarian options for room service. It took me over 20 minutes to check out, making me slightly late for my trip to the airport. I think the staff member did not appreciate the importance of moving faster to get people checked out. Only a few English channels on the TV.

6.0 Good
Pros: Room were sparkling clean and bedding was comfortable. Some staff were very friendly like technician, cleaning lady and parking door keeper. Good breakfast. Would love more tunisian food.
Cons: Kitchen, bathroom and bathtube sinks were ALL clocked. Front desk said our junior suite was upgraded... I didn't see any difference with the one I booked. Too expensive. Not good value. Too many security check, make me feel like the country is at war.
