9.3 Excellent (799 reviews)

With a stay at Sepilok Nature Resort in Sandakan, you'll be a 2-minute walk from Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary and 6 minutes by foot from Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre. Guests may use a roundtrip airport shuttle for a surcharge, and free self parking is available onsite.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic, attentive staff and lovely room. Breakfast was OK. Dinner lovely. Prices for food were not overly expensive. Beautiful, well kept place and great for bird and wildlife spotting. Our kids (baby and toddler) were welcomed and they loved it, we even saw an orangutan while having breakfast. PS thanks for finding and keeping our son's dinosaur until we collected it!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: So close to nature and the excellent air conditioning.
Cons: The extortionate prices at the bar and restaurant compared with the nearby restaurants.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location was excellent, very helpful and friendly staff and the night trek!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: My best stay in Sabah by far! The chalet was a really good size - comfy bed, big shower, very clean. Surrounded by nature so it was quite private; and the hammock on the terrace was a perfect touch - peaceful and relaxing! The staff were really friendly and helpful. The restaurant overlooking the small lake was great. The layout of the whole resort in the middle of the jungle is very well done. The jungle walk offered by the resort is a nice touch even though you dont really see too much. The location is also great - quick walk to the orangutan rehab centre and the sun bear sanctuary. Would definitely stay here again on my next visit!
Cons: Limited food options at the resort hotel - not enough local foods at all - and not much for food options in the area either.
7.1 Good
Pros: Quiet, rustic but comfortable and clean room, pleasant dining terrace overlooking the lake. Very convenient for Orang Utans, Sun Bears and Rainforest Discovery Centre
Cons: Food was a diabolical fusion of asian and western, limited menu and overpriced. Breakfast poor and not included. There are four restaurants and one food stall near the resort but the desk staff only mentioned one of them, and only reluctantly when asked directly. Tours are expensive, best organised locally outside the resort. Half an hour and RM50 for a taxi into town, same again to come back. RM100 airport transfer through the resort, RM42 from the airport by taxi
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Perfect jungle setting. The night tour with Sonny was also very good.
Cons: Nothing, it was amazing
7.1 Good
Pros: I saw hornbills. Also the concierge helped me with charging my camera.
Cons: The breakfast was ordinary, a buffet would be better. Quite expensive. The power outlets should be multi-country. Wifi in the chalets would when clients have work to do
10.0 Excellent
Pros: LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION!!! It was just beautiful and perfectly situated for a 5 minute stroll down to the orangutan and sun bear sanctuaries. The lodge (12-B) was idyllic, I could lye on that hammock all day watching the wild life and listening to the sounds of the rain forest. The night walk organised by the resort was fab too! We would definitely recommend this experience.
Cons: It was'nt a problem as such, however we did have a leaking roof found during one of the heavy down pours but we just moved the bed, put a cup underneath it and reported it on checking out so that it could be fixed before the next people arrived. The food and drinks bill can mount up after a couple of days as there isn't really anywhere else to go to eat.

7.9 Good
Pros: The rooms were really nice and the atmosphere is very peaceful being essentially in the forest. The bathrooms were some of the most modern I have used when staying at hostels in Borneo or Indonesia.
Cons: Checkout is at 10am for some reason and there's no breakfast while their restaurant is really expensive. Wifi doesn't reach to all of the rooms so you have to sit in the outside lobby in the heat to effectively use internet. It's rather expensive but they are one of the few games in town.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Clean and well presented facility. Friendly and helpful staff.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful location, friendly staff, clean and pleasant place, great for visiting local attractions. Very few mosquitoes
Cons: Restaurant only opened limited hours and chioce not great. But better place across the road to get food and drinks. The steps up to reception after long travel
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Brilliant place - impeccably clean, organised and top location. Site has a small shop for snacks and water, there is a site restaurant and another local run restaurant opposite. All the main centres are within walking distance and Grab also operates from there I noted. Shuttles and other tours organised at the desk on request. Highly recommend.
Cons: If the main reception foyer had a fridge to store things like fruit it would be faultless in my view.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Great location, walkable distance to all attractions, especially rainforest discovery centre. Nicely laid out grounds. Friendly staff. Restaurant on site. Outdoor bathroom.
Cons: Wifi only available at reception. Limited evening meals in restaurant. Fridge in room would be an advantage.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful well kept grounds and spotless accommodation. Excellent air con and freshly cooked breakfast. Walking distance to all 3 centres. Perfect location for all ages. Strongly recommend doing the night walk but you need plenty of mosquito protection and a torch. This place is a proper little gem.
Cons: Nothing.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Great location about 700m from the Rainforest Discovery Centre & 1100m from the orang-utan centre. Wifi only at reception but worked well. Breakfast was solid. Dinner menu OK but better restaurant literally right over the road and we saw most guests eating there every night. We had a dorm all to ourselves which was spacious and great value.
Cons: Wifi in rooms would be good. Breakfast finishing at 9 is a tad early for a sleep in?
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Quiet, good dinner, very well kept grounds.
Cons: Not me but inaccessible for wheelchair bound guests. 20 odd steps to lobby n 6-8 steps down to chalets.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Spacious and comfortable room Great location - walking distance to everything Friendly and helpful staff at the reception
Cons: Breakfast was terrible
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Lovely spacious rooms and clean bathrooms in a beautiful natural setting. The breakfast is delicious and the lodge is very close to all the main attractions. Great WiFi as long as it is working. There is a pretty cheap restaurant across the street if you don't want to pay for the buffet dinner.
Cons: Staff were not forthcoming with information about tours provided by the lodge.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Great location to see the Orangutans and Sun bears.
Cons: No sociable area for people in dorms.

7.9 Good
Pros: My favourite things about this hotel were definitely the view from the room and the breakfast buffet which featured loads of local dishes. The rooftop pool was nice in itself but unfortunately, loud music made it hard to relax. The room was very spacious and the bed was very comfortable.
Cons: The Wi-Fi didn't work in our room, there was no hand soap and no kettle. It's ironic that you get free flow tea and water in a basic 20 euro accommodation in Borneo but not in a 5-star hotel... The prices in the hotel were ridiculous compared to the rest of Sabah (charging 5 times the normal price for a cup of tea for example)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location within easy walking distance to the Central Market and some great restaurants. Literally connected to a small shopping centre. The Four points was clean, the staff were very friendly and helpful.
7.5 Good
Pros: ambient is nice
Cons: parking has too many swirl
9.7 Excellent
Pros: Pool was amazing! We stayed out there for ages ordering drinks and relaxing as the rest of our stay was really hectic with tours and treks. Room facing onto the sea had an amazing view and the bathroom had a window opening onto the view also Breakfast was the best we had I Asia in 3 weeks!
Cons: Not enough sun loungers. Only about 16 for a hotel with hundreds of rooms

7.9 Good
Pros: Nice breakfast, showers and bed. Through the girl at the reception we also found a driver that was returning to KK and brought us there for the cost of the bus ticket!
Cons: A cardinal fish caged in a very small tank outside the bedroom was a quite sad thing to see
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location is excellent. The toilets and bathrooms are kept very clean. At breakfast there are always different types of fruits and anything else you need. The staff are very helpful and friendly. I really enjoyed the sitting area at reception to chill out in the evenings. Lots of shops, restaurants just outside the hostel.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Big nice and room, hot showers, nicely working air conditioning. Free water refills, coffee/tea available whenever. Lovely and super helpful staff. Big thank you especially to Aziah who booked a trip for us even after we left the hostel.

Pros: Easy to organise transport to Sepilok. A day trip is manageable and taxis cheap.

Featured amenities include a computer station, complimentary newspapers in the lobby, and luggage storage. A roundtrip airport shuttle is provided for a surcharge (available 24 hours).
4.2 Okay
Pros: The rooms were clean and comfy.
Cons: Everything was included in the price. However the program was exactly the same no matter how long you stay. So we wanted to cancel the second day but unfortunately we couldnt. You also dont get to see many things during the tours. There is no network (not the lodge fault obviously) but it said it had wifi and it didnt, so it was a bit difficult to plan the rest of the trip from that point.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: This is unique as they completely organise everything from pick up to all meals and river cruising. Highly recommended, although didn’t see a lot of animals like we thought we would.
7.1 Good
Pros: We loved our boat guy Omar showing us all the animals on the river cruises.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: One of our highlights in Malaysia - Smooth pick up from our hotel in Sandakan and 2 hour transfer to lodge. Very clean cabins and decent food. All was very organized when we arrived we had a greeting and outline of the plans for the days. For a small fee you can rent wellies torches and binoculars there is also a small shop to buy chips, beer and soft drinks. Wine is available but super expensive. The sightseeing program (all included for us) was really good. Early morning boat cruise for 1 hour then breakfast. A 1 hour hike then lunch. free time until 4pm boat cruise for 2 hours. 7pm was dinner and 8pm was the night walk. We very much enjoyed all the activities. we stayed for 3 nights and felt the last day the information on the 2 walks was repetitive. We were very lucky we saw elephant, big croc, all the monkeys, a bearded pig many hornbills and birds it was great. I would highly recommend Nature Lodge Kinabatagan.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very well organised Meals good - rice and curry for lunch and dinner Ac in dorms as well as chalets Brilliant guides and staff
9.2 Excellent
Pros: It is located in the Borneo jungle alongside a river. The daily schedule is great as you get to do and see a lot. The guides were great at spotting and finding animals. The night walk was excellent. Food was pretty good too.
Cons: There is not a proper briefing about the jungle and it’s history and current state. This lack of an overall view is disappointing. There is a difference in guides. You are assigned to a specific guide. Ours was always late and we had the feeling he wanted to get the trip Over ASAP AT TIMES.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The room was basic but clean and comfortable with good air con. Ensuite was good with a roomy shower. The meals included were very tasty. The included tours were good fun and all the guides were great. All staff were friendly and helpful. We saw lots of wildlife including a wild orangutan. We enjoyed our stay and would happily return.
Cons: The airport transfer pick up process was a very long process. Drop off was much quicker.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Nice clean accommodation and well organised for all activities
Cons: Could have varied the meals a little.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Overall lovely staff, very comfy beds, good food and atmosphere.
Cons: The bathrooms didn't have toilet paper for over a day until I told the lady . They weren't particularly clean. Our guide barely took time during the night walks to try to spot any animals or insects. A bit longer would have been required to get to see more animals and insects.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: - Clean - Good food - Aj was a good tour guide during our stay - Staff friendly - Safe and fun
Cons: - Nothing

Pros: Beautiful location, very close to Sepilok attractions with the help of the free shuttle twice daily. The rooms are simple yet comfortable with A/C and mosquito nets - beautiful outlook over the forest from the room and the outdoor bathroom. Photos dont do it justice! On site restaurant served tasty food with an amazing view. Wish we'd stayed longer - thanks to the lovely staff for a great stay!
Cons: Nothing!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Great location and views, plenty of spaces to relax. Free shuttle to Orangutan and Sunbear sanctuary which is very helpful!
Cons: Very hot in the longhouse, however the weather itself was very hot, so difficult to avoid.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Room and food were perfect.
Cons: Nothing.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Loved the view from the family rooms!
8.3 Excellent
Pros: For the price I don’t think it gets any better. Staff were great, we were a little late checking in but they made sure we had some dinner before the restaurant closed. Food was well priced and delicious and the free shuttle makes it easy to see the main sights in town. Beds were comfortable and there were great common spaces to take in the scenic landscape.
Cons: Dorm room could use more outlets, also the showers pictured were from the chalets and not indicative of what you get in the dorms. And just be aware that it’s in the jungle: there will be bugs. Lots of bugs.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The location was perfect to feel secluded up in the treetops. The rooms were simple, clean and I liked the outdoors bathroom.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Simple but brilliant rooms with a good bed and AC and stunning views over the jungle. Part outdoor bathroom is fun too! Staff were super friendly and helpful, free shuttle bus to the Rehabilitation centre is a great touch, tasty food (note that food only available at meal times, not in between and no shops nearby so bring snacks if needed!) We did the firefly tour too through the hotel - a magical and informative experience!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: I really loved the location of the accommodation. The staff were friendly and organised tours for me. Free shuttle to Orangatan sanctuary.
Cons: Wifi not great Can only pay in cash, no ATM close by
9.2 Excellent
Pros: I stayed 2 nights here. It was a nice place to relax and read in the hammocks the first day, the second I went to the rehab centers. Free shuttle offered at 9am, back at 4pm. Other tours such as to the proboscis monkey sanctuary or down to the river for day or overnight trips were offered as well, though I did not go on them. Mosquito nets in the dorms. Not very many backpackers come through, though I met some nice people. Staff were friendly and helpful. Food at the restaurant was good.
Cons: N/a
7.9 Good
Pros: The private bedrooms were great, the views from the balcony over the jungle are incredible and the air con is very much appreciated!
Cons: The food wasn’t great and there are no other food options around as the place is very isolated so you kind of have to eat there

Cons: Perfect. Had to get a extra pillow but no problem.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Being offered to upgrade by the staff to but we stayed in super comfort room with balcony (at level 4). We had a lot of beautiful views from the lovely balcony. Kids love to swim and the pool is well maintained, the gym looks great and a lot of green all around the hotel. Sabah Hotel should preserve it for future generation. Only 10 minutes or less to Sandakan City (by car); parking at hotel area is ample for all. Breakfast are OK and enough for everyone! Internet is OK but not so great. Anyway, love to spend the time with family without the Internet ;)

Pros: The property is walking distance from the orangutan center and is merged into a green valley. The staff is very kind tryn to accomodate your request and a special thanks to JOE from the booking department who went the extra mile to help us out !
Cons: Sepilok forest edge resort has lot of potential to develop but seems like the owner doesnt care: there are some sun beds around the little pool but there are no mattress on it and even if u ask to the staff mattress are not provided for those beds ,hence very uncomfortable. The resort is surrounded by a spacious garden but there aren’t places where properly relax, few hammocs would do the job!

The boardwalk around the lake is attractive. There was a good selection for breakfast. The swimming pool is an excellent bonus! Staff were friendly and helpful.

Cons: The daily change over between generators at midnight switched off the a/c, which then needed resetting to turn it back on as things got hotter in the early hours of the morning

Loved it so much, we in fact decided to stay 2 more nights! Airconditioning in the room is soooo Nice after a few nights in a hot jungle hut, so that was a big plus too
Cons: Abolutely nothing
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The Resort is situated right next to the orang-utan and sun bear sanctuaries and just a short walk from the rdc. The canopy walk connecting the different parts of the Resort is a nice touch and the huge garden is quite beautiful with kingfisher visiting the pond at times. The staff was great. Cons: No drinking water refills possible, not eben for a charge. We had to rely on plastic bottles a lot.

7.5 Good
Pros: Is very close to the harbour but far from the traffic noises. The breakfast is nice and cheap .
Cons: Its a very basic hotel, good for 1 night if u have to stay in Sandakan . The area itself is a little dirty. Wifi is very weak .
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The staff here is very well-trained and professional. Their English is more than adequate and they always stand ready to assist you with whatever you need. The showers/hot water are terrific. It is also convenient to have in-house eating opportunities, although there are plenty within easy walking distance of the hotel.
Cons: The beds were a bit short (I am 5'11 and hung over the end) and the air-conditioning is great but a bit all-or-nothing, which means one has to decide if one wants to sleep with a breeze overhead (even with the fan off). But I didn't let that detract from enjoying the hotel. These are minor things. As humid as it is here, I am not inclined to complain about "too much" AC.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The view is great! Everything was very clean and well maintained, v friendly and helpful staff

Air conditioning working but not reached the cooling as desire. The main door felt shacking during opening and closing the door. Probably need a major renovation instead of minor repairing works on going without notification displayed ... hopefully the management really look into this matter seriously... thank you.

Pros: Breakfast
Cons: No lift
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The furniture provided, especially the bed are very comfortable. Its cleanliness also in a top condition. The location is very quite and peaceful, and yet the food stall, supermarket are located nearby to your convenience.
Cons: It will be so much better if the hotel to have elevator to make it earsier for the customer to go up to their room at 1st and 2nd floor. It will be a big problem if you are travelling with family. The hotel staff also would not assist you to bring up the luggage, unless you asked them while they are not busy
7.9 Good
Pros: We stayed at Mark's Lodge for an extended period of time in May as we were on our elective in Sandakan. Initially, I had booked 7 nights prior to leaving for Malaysia but we decided to only stay 5 nights and head off for a 10-day trip to Vietnam and Cambodia. The hotel staff were fantastic and held our bag for us whilst we went away and then also gave us 1 night free on credit as we had only used 5 nights from our previously paid 7. When it came to booking our flights and hotels, we had a major catastrophe, the hotel wifi went down mid-booking but the staff on hand were extremely helpful, offering to tether their own phones to our laptop and even let us ring the UK to get our families to book for us as the tethering didn't seem to work. The guest service and kindness from the hotel and their staff are second to none!
Cons: The only downside for me was the WiFi being very poor on the third floor but once we returned from Vietnam, the WiFi issue had been fixed. Also, there is no lift so climbing up 2 flights of stairs became strenuous in the heat, especially with luggage also. (Although staff do offer to carry your big bags up to your room for you).
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very intuitive and 1st class facilities. BOSE radio, LED TV with USB extension for easy plug in, bathrobe. The little things they got it right.
Cons: The adjoining restaurant was closed, no breakfast on the premises. No lift, walk up.
7.1 Good
Pros: Room was clean n all facilities works. Bed was wonderful. Had a very good sleep.
Cons: No elevator.
