The staf was really nice and polite and the hotel was wonderful. Everithing was great. We highly recommend this hotel! 10/10
The Umbria Jazz Festival was AMAZING and this location worked out great. Our preferred location fell through at the last minute and the Grifone was one of the last available rooms in the city. The walk up the hill to the center of town was not as bad as some of the reviews stated. Yes, it's a hike. But the views from our fifth story room were amazing! The staff doesn't speak English (but we should have known more Italian! Our bad!) Everything worked out just fine - the great hospitality and warm smiles went the distance.
The room was clesn and had everything you need. Bed was comfotable. Air conditioning very good. Bathroom good size and well appointed and would have been spot on if not for broken shower fixtures as aforementioned. All other staff apart from initial receptionist seemed friendly and helpful enough.
Our initial reception was not very welcoming at all.! That did not put us off to a good start. As we'd been travelling all day we wanted a shower to freshen up before going out. The bracket to hold the shower head was broken and had some black electrical tape trying to hold it. This wasn't even a recent fix as the tape was broken and curled at the edges. Consequently, the shower head wouldn't hold at all in any upright position and we could not shower properly. Also on bathroom mirror, one bulb out, and other 2 of different types. Basically it appeared that anything that had broken was bodged to get by and not spend proper money to put it right!!! That said, my husband who was now particularly disgruntled by both the frosty reception and the non shower, had a right moan at aforementioned receptionist and by the time we came back from dinner, it had been put right. Now I appreciate this is not a 5* hotel. I stopped here before in February 2019, so was not expecting any more than basic for the price, but basically, whatever the price, everything should work and as soon as something is broken, it should be fixed appropriately and correctly. The owners should not expect guests to put up with anything they would not want to put up with themselves if they were stopping at a hotel.
Overall I did like this hotel...it would be better in the warmer months I feel. If I was touring down Italy it would be a nice stop-over with plenty of parking and not far from the motorway. It is family run and they were all very welcoming and accommodating when we asked them anything. The rooms were well decorated and beds comfortable. The bathroom very decent. All exceptionally clean. There is a bus stop around the corner and we caught a bus to Asissi on Saturday. The restaurant looked as though it had a good menu with reasonable prices but we chose not to eat there as no one else was there and we wanted a place with a bit more of a buzz/atmosphere so ate in the centre both nights.
The location was quite a way from the centre and all uphill....even to the first set of escalators. So you need to be fit and happy to walk. It is also a long way from the main train station...22 mins walk. Being winter time the hotel was very quiet and perhaps because of this there isn't hot water all day which caught my son out who went back to shower and change at about 4.30pm before going back out to dinner. It was also quite cool in the rooms as the heating wasn't always on...and the thermostat was centrally controlled. Only one extra blanket in the wardrobe in a triple room. I also agree with previous comments about the breakfast...quite limited...there were a lot of cakes and pastries. More meats and cheeses etc would have been nice....but again...I can see that the time of year and amount of guests may have influenced this.
The landlady was very nice.
We were charged the eggs for breakfast extra although the breakfast was included in the price!!!
