The best airport to fly into if you’re visiting the Orkney Islands is Kirkwall Airport (KOI). Different car rental agencies are available on site, including Europcar, Avis, Keddy, Firefly, and Easirent. The car rental counters are conveniently located in the arrivals hall of the main terminal. Kirkwall is the chief town of the Orkney Islands, and you’ll find other off-site airport car rental locations with the right vehicles to start your trip in the archipelago.
The state of roads in the Orkney Islands is generally good. Roads are well-maintained and among the best in Scotland. Most roads on the mainland are two-way single carriageways. Several areas have single-track roads with passing areas, so you should be able to pull over to allow others to pass or to pass other vehicles safely. It’s good to stop and let others pass if you’re driving slowly in these sections. Roads are regularly maintained, so be prepared for road closures, usually made public on the Orkney Islands Council website.
Well-maintained roads in the Orkney Islands mean you can drive any car to various destinations. The type of car you rent depends on your needs. An economy rental is the best if you are on a solo trip and have a small amount of luggage. Consider a standard car or minivan if you are traveling as a group and have more luggage. An SUV rental is the best pick if your itinerary involves drives to various offroad destinations on the islands.
The Orkney Islands have clear road signs written in English, but most popular attractions are off the main public transport route, so renting a car with a GPS navigation system is a good idea to navigate the islands.
