Pros: Beautiful building and location excellent for exploring. Staff go above and beyond to make sure your stay goes well. We had the dinner and breakfast included and it’s a must!
Cons: It’s a traditional ryokan and so is the bedding, we found it a little uncomfortable but more probably because we aren’t used to it. Still highly recommend staying here

Pros: Classic ryokan for pilgrims of nearby famous shrine (otosan of family is a shinto priest), now used to host also foreign travellers who can find this place. My room had the best view in Japan, likely, on mountains and valley and other old rooftops.
Cons: Nothing not liked.

Pros: Nao (staff) was very friends and helpful. He knows everything about Nagano and have us excellent recommendations over the course of our stay. Most welcoming! The location is very close to the temple and many restaurants add well as a public bath. The building has a very traditional charm and is well suited for travelers.
Cons: Nothing. The place would get a clear recommendation for a stay in Nagano from us.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I stayed 3 nights at 1166Backpackers and wish I could have stayed home. The owner Orie-San knows how to make you feel comfortable, if you are luck Shi-chan might run around and even like you! The staff, Nao-san and Kei-san are very lively and will help you out with pretty much anything. Their recommandation were always on point and Nao-san even taught me how to make Syphon coffee, it was delicious! I strongly recommend that you stay there for your next stay in Nagano.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: All the staff was very nice and they provided information about the place and next spots to visit in my trip. Also gave free really good coffe in the morning:)
Cons: The noise other guests did during the night almost ruin a bit my opinion on the place but it isn't the staff fault.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Friendly staff and very good location
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We were welcomed during one of the worst typhoons in Japanese history and they really went out of their way for us and to make sure we were safe during our stay and during our continued journey. Many thanks for everything :)
8.3 Excellent
Pros: We have been stopped by the typhoon here but it couldn’t be the best “plan B” ever. The staff is amazing, organised, super polite and so funny. You’ll feel home.
Cons: You have got just one “western” toilet, but the hostel is not so big. You could manage without no problems.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: It's a great hostel, a caring and sharing place where it's all about getting together. Some real, good coffee in the early mornings.
Cons: I don't care that there's only one shower for example, it's such a lovely place.

Pros: Quiet atmosphere
Cons: Felt bad smell from the bottom part of show curtain
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Loved the fact that the hotel is next to the station. Hotel also allowed us to store our big luggages for 3 days while we did the Alpine Route.
Cons: Being next to the station means you will be able to hear the trains. It depends on which facing you have. The first time we stayed in the hotel it was ok but when we returned to stay with them after the Alpine Route, we were given a room which face the train tracks and it was noisy. It is a good thing there are no trains after 12am
10.0 Excellent

Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent

Pros: The location is good and my room was nice.
Cons: Their WiFi does NOT support more than the basics you need. First time in my very long time experience that I could not use the WiFi over my phone. They tried but could not solve it. Shame.
7.5 Good
Pros: It was very convenient to the station, and quiet! The rooms were nice. It was great to be able to use a washing machine/ drier at this point in our stay. There was a varied buffet breakfast.
Cons: We had gotten used to there being a large public bath in hotels! But the bath in the room was good, and the available temperature fine.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent and helpful staff, assisted with language and travel issues, local attractions. Lally was a real gem, going beyond the call of duty
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel has great facilities (lots of 'little extras') and accommodating staff, who answered all our silly questions on topics like where to watch rugby world cup matches, where is good to eat, how to get places and how to forward our luggage. Breakfast was good - particularly if you like a Japanese breakfast.
Cons: My only criticism of our room was that the bed was a little small, with one side pushed against a wall.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location was great; very close to the train station, although we went by car. Free coffee, tea, and water in the lobby was very nice to have. The shampoo and body soap was plentiful. The room was a good size and my travel companion liked the large TV.
Cons: The entrance to the parking lot was a bit tricky to get to and was super narrow and hard to maneuver a large car. Good for driving practice, though!

Pros: Very clean and tidy. We got an upgrade for free to the Grand floors and everything was very comfortable and nice ! Would stay there again if needed :)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beyond our expectation! High quality hotel, big room, excellent location

Pros: Excellent location and fairly large room by Japanese standards. The freebie amenities/refreshments were a nice touch, plus we used the washing machines and dryer as well, which is so handy. Breakfast is mostly Japanese style, but still very tasty.

Pros: Great price for reasonable size room

Pros: The location is next to none and the hosts are fantastic
Cons: The heater is unreliable making for cold nights.
7.5 Good
Pros: A great location in the heart of Echoland and cosy cottage which was nice after a long day boarding, staff were happy to drive me to the bus port for my departure which was greatly appreciated on a cold winters day
Cons: The bedding was quite simple but there was no shortage of blankets and the bathroom facilities was quite cramped but i am 6'4, the adjoining cottage has thin walls as well but it wasn't too much of an inconvenience
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Well managed pension. Rooms and common facilities are clean. Walls are thin but during my stay all guests behaved respectably.
Cons: The breakfast (continental style) is minimal, you can t expect much for 600 JPY. Annoying music, played from morning to evening in the hall ways but can be well heard in the rooms. God knows who wants to listen to soothing piano/guitar tunes all day long.
7.1 Good
Pros: I did not eat at the property, but the staff was very friendly and I had a very good stay. I was here for a weekend of biking both road and off road.
Cons: The bed was a bit too hard fore my liking.

Pros: Nice
Cons: Hotel owner Shing was very temperamental. Shouted at us once for spilling coffee by mistake. Also seemed annoyed that we were there in general... we felt like an inconvenience. HOWEVER, he did book the ski school and taxis and ski pass for us which was very helpful.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Service is excellent!
Cons: Room is a bit small for 4 persons.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic location right across the street from the train station. There are restaurants in the same building as well as karaoke if you're looking for something to do. The room was bigger than most that we had in Japan and everything was very clean. The breakfast selection was big and everything tasted great. The staff were very kind and helpful. I would definitely recommend staying here.
Cons: We felt that the breakfast was a bit expensive.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The staff were helpful in arranging our luggage to Kanazawa although the initial plan was to send them to Takayama. However, because of the typhoon (No. 19), the courier was badly affected and they could not handle our luggage delivery. The Hotel staff helped to coordinate and make the arrangements. Thank you!
Cons: Not so conversant in English and they could not provide much info on the Tateyama Kurobe route when we asked. Perhaps they are more a business hotel...
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is right opposite the station. There's no covered way to go there though. It's a very pleasant hotel, well maintained/ new. I like that we could "shop" for additional items like irons, trouser press or extra pillows (do note it's on a first come first served basis). There's food easy available below the building, next to the building and opposite the building.
Cons: I can hear the phones beeping in the rooms next to mind, as well as the guests talking and laughing in the corridors loudly. Somehow the door and walls doesn't really keep the noises out.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Loved the miso paste for breakfast. I put it on my salad. Was that “correct”? And the salmon and chips in the breakfast buffet.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very helpful staff. Quiet in great area

Pros: Excellent hotel with outstanding service.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Bed was comfortable and the room was warm. The free onsen (spa) on the top floor was lovely. The staff were helpful and welcoming- they responded quickly to emailed questions as well. We found the hotel to be very good overall. Having the genius discount for the room was helpful, too. Hotel is close to trains.
Cons: The hotel is close to Asakusa, and there are lots of restaurants over there. It is a bit far from Shinjuku, Ginza and Shibuya- all require at least 20 minutes on train. Hotel is a bit pricey, but accommodation in Tokyo is expensive.
6.0 Good
Cons: The expensive breakfast was very limited choice example very runny eggs only choice is omelet, cold very cold soft boiled eggs,Japanese choices I believe were better the service was excellent.

Pros: Old building was amazing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is the second time we’ve stayed at Chuokan Shimizuya Ryokan and once again we had a lovely time. The ryokan itself is attractive and such fun to stay in as a tourist. Yes there are a few stairs but it’s part of the charm. The shower room has an onsen in which is so relaxing at the end of the day. The room we had was spacious and we were cosy in our beds. The best thing about this place however are the owners. They are so friendly and sweet and they make you feel like royalty! They speak little English but nobody should expect this I feel and it’s easy enough to get along without language! Highly recommend if you want an authentic stay with owners who are true hosts.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Comfortable room in a quiet ryokan. The location is very convenient for visiting Zenkoji, which is about 5 minutes' walk, otherwise it's around 15 minutes' walk to Nagano Station. I particularly enjoyed the public bath, which is very relaxing after a long day.
Cons: Communication was a little difficult before the stay, but everything else was fine.

Cons: Stayed Cottage. Staying cottage was a special experience but Never again. Room was with no airconditioning so hot and very humid. The bed was damp. Bathroom and toilet was so confined. Very inconvenient to bath. Onsen located at East was a paid onsen (JPY2,000/person)but not allowed to use for West on Saturday. It was a big resort having 8 golf courses so very crowded. We had to line up and took long time for check-in. Connected to tax-free shopping mall so nothing to do except shopping.
3.8 Mediocre
Pros: After there was complaints, they tried to fix all good.
Cons: Very bad impression and disappointed. To arrived at 2 p.m but the rooms are not occupied until 3 p.m and the buggies to rooms are waited for 30 mins after registered.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Great environment for the cottage.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: I love everything about this inn. The location is perfect for those who want to stay away from busy cities like Tokyo. Restaurants, supermarket, 100 yen store, Uniqlo and other stores are all walking distance. Great room aesthetics. Everything is clean and new. Toiletries and WiFi are provided. Coffee, tea and Japanese style breakfast comes with the room and prepared daily. The best part of our stay were the innkeepers or owners, Haruhiko and Fumie. They went above and beyond in ensuring that we had a comfortable stay at their inn. They helped us plan our daily agenda and drove us to the train or bus stations. On my birthday, Haruhiko accompanied us to Hakuba Ski Resort while Fumie prepared a surprise birthday party for me. It was such a memorable experience and would highly recommend this inn to anyone who wants to experience Japanese hospitality at its best.
9.5 Excellent

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Our host were super nice! Couldn’t ask for better! They were really welcoming and made us fell like home! The house is really beautiful! Still traditional but in a very modern way. It was the best accommodation in our trip!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owners were very welcoming and very generous during our stay, giving us snacks to take on our days out and random gifts for no other reason than to be friendly. The accommodation was exceptional, with tatami mats, futons and that traditional feel that we were looking for. The laundry has the latest appliances, one touch and our clothes were washed and dried. I can't speak highly enough of the whole experience. And when you are in the area, Sanada house and the surrounding old samurai houses were highlights of the holiday, far better than any of the better known attractions. And for some reason, we were the only people about.
Cons: There was nothing I didn't like.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The Owner is very nice and helpful , they serve dessert & Tea as wellcome drink and serve brekfast with some fruit & soup as a service and the taste is very nice. The room is very clean and modern style
Cons: I would like them to expand their property since they have only 4 rooms, and highly recommend to stay at this property if visit to Nagano , anyway if I have a chance to comeback to Nagano, I will stay here again
