Pros: The whole experience was just wonderful. A typical Ryokan if you want to experience Japan from its most welcoming side. Do not miss the Food! It was simply outstanding!
Cons: All well
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful Ryokan where you can feel deep culture and beauty. Real hospitality, great people and place. Dinner is delicious, very comfortable futon.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hosts were incredibly kind and gracious, going out of their way to make us comfortable and to ensure we had a wonderful stay! The location was terrific: quiet, while also close to the bus stop and a very short walk from the first of five shrines.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We thought Oshi Ryokan was fantastic and we couldn't recommend it highly enough. It was a great way to experience traditional Japanese lodgings. The room was very large and comfortable. The bath was lovely. We were very well looked after by the owners, who were very kind and helpful. They spoke very good English, which was helpful for us! The food (both dinner and breakfast) was delicious, and they catered for vegetarians really well. I would definitely recommend getting dinner.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was great, the host was really helpful, and the location is ideal for a break from bigger cities. The landscape is beautiful around that traditionnal Ryokan, great feel of Japan while staying there. Also, breakfast was delicious.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This quiet and historical place is very suitable for those who practice mediatation and seek peace. I am so pleased to recommend energetic food here. I do appreciate that they did vegetarian adjustment for me. Fresh air, water, and food really revive me. I can't wait to find some other time to revisit and be a pious pilgrim again.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Delicious food Very helpful and friendly owners
9.6 Excellent
Pros: the location, the owners, the food (we ordered dinner as well as the free breakfast), the experience of the ryokan in general, the on-site onsen, the attention the owners paid to making our kids feel comfortable, the room was spacious and very unique
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything! What an amazing place! The staff was so attentive. The room was perfect. And the food was unbelievable!! Definitely going to stay here again when I return to Togakushi. Do yourself a favor!
Cons: Nothing! I really can’t speak highly enough of this place. Totally comfortable and affordable. Extremely convenient to the area attractions (the shrine paths). And the accommodations felt so “authentic“!
1166 Backpackers - Nagano - Building
2
9.0 Excellent (272 reviews)
Overview Reviews
1166 Backpackers has just opened on Oct. 28, 2010. We would like to make your stay in Nagano as comfortable and memorable as possible. The tasteful old private house which was built 50 years ago was renovated without disturbing the good atmosphere of Japanese old house. Please make yourself at home. We have one 4 bed male dormitory ( bunk bed style ), 5 bed female dormitory ( tatami style ) and one 2 - 3 bed private room ( tatami style ). During busy season, it might be changed. We can accomodate maximum of 12 people each night. As for being a small backpackers, we offer a family welcoming atmosphere for you.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Unique experiences (I was asked if I like to join a local fireworks festivalon my first night, another evening the hostel staff organized a hot pot); Excellent help for daytrips, food!, Very nice walk from the train station to the hostel (with many shops, and lights, thus also very nice to arrive later in the evening, takes just 20min, there is also a bus). Would come back. Thank you very much!
Cons: -
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Location is closed to the temple and easy to get the bus to outside the city, but it is about 30min by walking from Nagano station.
Cons: Staff is friendly and helpful.

Pros: The bed was more comfortable than in some other places I've stayed.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location
Cons: Not sound proof
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Everything is very good
Cons: A little bit far from the train station
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The place was great. The staff were very friendly. Always ready to help. Location was also very good. Good recommendations given by staff on activities and places to eat. Would recommend it.
7.5 Good
Pros: Great location for sights and owner goes above and beyond to set up a good itinerary for you. Basically they play tour company for free, with dozens of city maps that they go over with you. Nice social vibe to due giant table in the lounge and staff organized a hanami at night with food and beer (for a small fee) as it was peak sakura season. Small dorms, but comfortable. Fun to see a more traditional Japanese house for once.
Cons: That being said.. Also hot too fun to see a traditional Japanese house. There's one 1 western toilet + one shower in the entire house (serving about 15 guests, I believe) + 1 squating toilet. Western toilet is next to the living room, so best not feel sick while you're there ;) I could literally hear every word people said downstairs and you hear every door and squeak. Positive thinking: fun experience for once and OK for 1-2 nights. Staff and vibe make up for it.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Loved how friendly and knowledgeable the staff were. They had great recommendations about things to do in the area. Super cosy hostel with a great atmosphere made this hostel stand out amongst all of the places I stayed in Japan.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: They are selling local craft beers. Good coffee for free. Free snacks at arrival. Casual atmosphere. Nice staff.

8.8 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast had the usual limitations for health-conscious westtern guests. NO WHOLE MEAL OR MULTI-GRAIN BREAD; NO SUGAR FREE MUESLI OF A WHOLE GRAIN TYPE. ALMOST A TOTAL LACK OF WESTERN NEWS PROGRAMS PARTICULARLY ON ENGLISH AS OPPOSED TO A VOICE OVER TRANSLATION IN JAPANESE. THE SAME IN EVERY HOTEL (BOTH HEALTHY BREAD AND MUESLI AND ABSENCE OF ENGLISH TV). OTHERWISE GOOD.
Cons: see ABOVE - IT IS A CONSTANT STRAIN TO HAVE HEALTHY BREAD AND MUESLI - EVERYWHERE. THE FIRST HOTEL THAT SHOWS ITSELF CONSCIOUS OF THIS WILL ATTRACT MANY GUESTS. BUT IT MAY BE USELESS TELLING THIS TO AMERICANS (SUCH AS YOURSELVES) AS THEIR DIET IS APPALLING.

Pros: The location is next to none and the hosts are fantastic
Cons: The heater is unreliable making for cold nights.
7.5 Good
Pros: A great location in the heart of Echoland and cosy cottage which was nice after a long day boarding, staff were happy to drive me to the bus port for my departure which was greatly appreciated on a cold winters day
Cons: The bedding was quite simple but there was no shortage of blankets and the bathroom facilities was quite cramped but i am 6'4, the adjoining cottage has thin walls as well but it wasn't too much of an inconvenience
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Well managed pension. Rooms and common facilities are clean. Walls are thin but during my stay all guests behaved respectably.
Cons: The breakfast (continental style) is minimal, you can t expect much for 600 JPY. Annoying music, played from morning to evening in the hall ways but can be well heard in the rooms. God knows who wants to listen to soothing piano/guitar tunes all day long.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Stayed here for one night before our snow package started. They allowed us to arrive at 2.00am (last bus) and check in in the morning which was great. Our room was super toasty with heated flooring & a firm but comfortable bed. The staff was very friendly & enthusiastic. Bathroom & common areas were clean.
Cons: Drying room was quite small with only a heated cupboard.
7.1 Good
Pros: I did not eat at the property, but the staff was very friendly and I had a very good stay. I was here for a weekend of biking both road and off road.
Cons: The bed was a bit too hard fore my liking.

6.3 Good
Pros: Nice
Cons: Hotel owner Shing was very temperamental. Shouted at us once for spilling coffee by mistake. Also seemed annoyed that we were there in general... we felt like an inconvenience. HOWEVER, he did book the ski school and taxis and ski pass for us which was very helpful.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: It is unbelievably central ( literally on the same street as the main temple grounds), the staff are wonderful, kind, and pleasant. The rooms are very clean and the food is exceptional. The neighbourhood is also very warm, cosy, and full of small boutique stores.
7.5 Good
Pros: Nice ryokan just outside the Nagano city center. Would recommend. We had the half-board option, food was lovely, The staff were very helpful. Booked a family room, which was a spacious apartment over 2 floors with 2 baths. Note that only the lower floor has two twin beds, upstairs sleeping is on futons. Nagano is a lovely city, better if you have a car to explore the surrounding mountain area, like a visit to the snow monkey resort.
Cons: The inn is over 250 years old, and has a lot of original style. Parts have been renovated, like the breakfast hall.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Perfect location, right next to the Zenkōji temple. Comfortable futons and quiet room. Amazing breakfast freshly cooked.
Cons: Nothing! All good!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Food was outstanding, although a bit too much. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Really close to the temple for attending morning prayers.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The location is very near the Zenkoji Temple. Very convenient if you have intention to observe the morning prayer session that can start as early as 5.45am. The accommodation is traditional ryokan which offers a taste of Japan culture. The staff is very friendly. The Japanese breakfast is healthy.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: I had such a great experience there. Anyone who is looking for Ryokan type to stay should try this Ryokan. Breakfast and dinner were superb and super delicious. The staff is also very nice and helpful. I had to take the train so early on Friday morning. Usually there was no taxi at that time. However, the owner and staff helped me dragged my luggage aiming to send us on the bus and luckily there was 1 taxi passing by. I could be at the train station on time thanks to their effort
Cons: Actually, I would like to say that there were nothing that I did not like in this hotel. Just want to tell that if you are not familiar with sleeping on the floor with futon, you might feel a little bit uncomfortable. Anyway, I still recommend for you to try it out for once.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: It was a Lovely, authentic Ryokan with gracious hosts. The location was also superb.
Cons: The futons for sleeping were not as thick as I would like.
7.5 Good
Pros: The location is incredible, within the Zenkoji temple complex. The proprietors are so welcoming and put on a great Japanese breakfast.
Cons: The room was a bit primitive for a traditional ryokan. Futon was on the thin side and facilities and amenities were only adequate.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Perfect. I think this were the kindest people in the Hotel Business I've ever met.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is very easy to access from the train station, is very modern and sleek. The staff speak good to very good English and are very helpful. Breakfast has a good variety of Western food and Japanese food, which is clearly labelled and well presented. An amenities room on our floor enabled us to borrow and iron and ironing board when necessary. Large luggage can be a problem to store for ready access. We had a Superior twin which had limited space for our second suitcase, but we appreciated having a table and 2 chairs for reading and writing. CNN was the only English speaking channel on the TV. A mobile phone is available for use during your stay. A guest laundry is available.
Cons: Nothing
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Sizeable rooms close to the main attractions and 20 minutes walk from the station. King size bed and everything was top quality and easy to use.
Cons: Check in was 3pm and we arrived around 1pm. Usually hotels will try to accomodate us but we had to ask to store our bags in the interim. The plus was that when we returned after sight seeing our bags were in our room already.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is very well located just in front of the bus and train stations. There are many small streets in the vicinity with many restaurants, offering very pleasant strolls in the evening. Although small, the rooms are clean and offer all the amenities for short stays. All the equipment is new.
Cons: The sound proofing of the rooms is not that great. Although we didn't hear the traffic, our room was close to the elevators and I could hear the bell when the elevator was arriving. I could also hear our neighbour sneezing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast buffet. Hotel right across Nagano Station.
Cons: Step up into bathroom. Very dangerous. Wife almost hurt herself.
6.0 Good
Cons: The expensive breakfast was very limited choice example very runny eggs only choice is omelet, cold very cold soft boiled eggs,Japanese choices I believe were better the service was excellent.

Hundred percent recommended!!!

7.1 Good
Pros: Location
Cons: (Not so) private room AC
7.5 Good
Pros: pros: Nao-san is a very helpful host, he knows a lot about Nagano especially about Zenkoji temple. the hostel is an old Japanese house that he turns into a hostel, so charming. location is really good, within walking distance of the nearest station and bus stop, as well as to Zenkoji temple. also, washing machine and craft beers! social hostel but after 11 you gotta be quiet, so not noisy and people can still sleep.
Cons: cons: bit of a walk from the nearest minimarket and little dusty in the room, but otherwise no complaint.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The host is kind willing to wait for us to check in, while its near midnight. It has a kitchen to be used by guest..and free bread as breakfast.

8.3 Excellent
Pros: Super nice and helpful staff, and very homey place. Location was great as well.
Cons: The place could be cleaner (a bit of dust).
10.0 Excellent
Pros: There's no option for breakfast offered, actually. About the coffee, I was in hurry cause I woke up very late, so I missed the coffee they offered. About the staffs who were very highly praised, yes they were very friendly toward the guests. I meet 3 staffs during my one night-stay, and all of them conversed in English well. Note: I was asked about score for safety for this hostel (whether I agree or not) in booking.com site, but I couldn't find the score. So, I answered not agree. But, during my stay there was no safety issue I found. They offered safety deposit box for your valuables for free. The size is small, though. So, for anyone who wish to stay there, and need to keep they valuables there, do not bring something valuable in big size
Cons: The rooms are upstair, while the stairs quite narrow. I think it will help if it is mentioned how wide they are, so that guests can put into consideration when they bring big luggage with them. Mine was quite big, but was still managable to be brought upstair. But, I wonder how about those who bring bigger size of luggage
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly staff, really nice hostel. Central, convenient location very close to supermarkets and the temple.

Pros: Free face masks which the ladies in our group enjoyed! Location - close to the station but not so close that it was noisy and just a short bus ride to Zenko-ji Temple.
Cons: Breakfast buffet wasn't great. Small double rooms were the smallest we saw on our trip with the small bed squashed against a wall - way too small for 2 average European adults (they doubled as single rooms to give you an idea - we booked one small double and two singles and they were the same rooms!!)..

10.0 Excellent

9.6 Excellent
Pros: The shuttle service is absolutely amazing and would recommend this hotel chain to anyone. Made life easier and not having to pay for taxis.
Cons: The air conditioning wasn’t functioning properly when we arrived and through out the night.
5.0 Okay
Pros: The environment is good
Cons: Aircon was not working at all under the summer day. Bathroom has bad smell when using the toilet. No microwave oven. Transportation to n from house needs to wait a long time.
6.3 Good
Pros: Location, very near the shopping center with all the restaurants and train station.
Cons: We waited 20 mins for the buggy to send us to the cottage upon check in. On the day of check-out, we called the front desk to request for the buggy 1 hour before our appointment and was advised to wait for 30 mins. There was no buggy arrived 30 mins later and we have to call again to remind them and the buggy finally arrived in another 10 minutes later even though the actual drive between the lobby and the cottage is less than 5 minutes. We have to walked to the train station with our heavy luggage instead of taking the shuttle bus to meet the timeline.

7.9 Good
Cons: The staff made so many mistakes. They gave me wrong room number, when I went, someone is in the room.
3.3 Mediocre
Pros: Close to Karuizawa station. Allowed to stay with pet.
Cons: Stayed Cottage. Staying cottage was a special experience but Never again. Room was with no airconditioning so hot and very humid. The bed was damp. Bathroom and toilet was so confined. Very inconvenient to bath. Onsen located at East was a paid onsen (JPY2,000/person)but not allowed to use for West on Saturday. It was a big resort having 8 golf courses so very crowded. We had to line up and took long time for check-in. Connected to tax-free shopping mall so nothing to do except shopping.

Pros: Breakfast is good and nice view. Have parking space, comfortable room
Cons: Location is 10 min walk to city center
6.3 Good
Pros: Breakfast excellent, view so good. However price a bit too high. Total price including breakfast quite too expensive. The room is comfortable and clean but small.
Cons: Location is a bit too far from railway station. The room too small.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Spacious room and clean. Good location. Near station and walking distance to Zenoji temple
Cons: Nothing
8.8 Excellent
Pros: This hotel is a 10 minute walk from Nagano station and has excellent views over the city from the rooms on higher level floors. I would recommend paying the extra for a corner room as it is much more spacious with extensive windows.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Value for money.
Cons: Due to an accidental error I was overcharged but promptly reimbursed however I still bore the extra bank charges for their mistake. Can happen but not great.
7.1 Good
Pros: There is nothing really special or outstanding about my stay at JAL hotel Nagano - neither good nor bad. Staff was friendly. As I was traveling with some Japanese friends and they mostly did the talking, I'm not sure how well staff would handle English speaking guests though. The single room I got was ok (size & cleanliness) and the cleaning staff left all the amenities in a bag in front of the room on my second day as I used the "don't disturb"/"no cleaning required" signs. I would also highly recommend joining the "One Harmony" program BEFORE actually checking in as members seem to get quite a few goodies. This is especially nice if you might stay at more JAL, or affiliated, hotels. (If you do join after check-in, the benefits and points won't apply for that first stay, however.)
7.5 Good
Pros: Good location, nice room
Cons: Not updated since 98 Olympics
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Everything was great, from check in to check out. Easy check in with good competent staff and very helpful. Room a really good size, spotlessly clean and comfortable. Check out simple. This would be the best hotel we stayed in, in Japan. Very close to Restaurants and bars. Just a short walk from Train station to Hotel.
Cons: No complaints here!
7.5 Good
Pros: Nice location in the center of Nagano, close to the train station. Hotel was clean and comfortable.
Cons: The hotel was clearly built for the olympics in 1998, but has not been updated to 2019, so it felt a bit old. It is not too bad, since it was still very comfortable and nice hotel.

Pros: Well located close to the station. The room was comfortable and the staff was nice.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: An excellent value-for-money hotel in a very convenient location.
Cons: There's nothing at all to complain about at this hotel.
5.1 Okay
Pros: Great breakfast Solid room key was cool
Cons: AC didn't have adjustment between hot and cold. At 4am my room was a sauna and I couldn't cool the room or open a window. Bed was broken down and uncomfortable. Furniture is dated with many signs of wear. Shower temperature would change immediately and without warning.

7.9 Good
Pros: Breakfast with a lot of choices, very kind welcome. It was good as expected.
Cons: Times for breakfast are not available on the website and I had to leave before 7am one day. It was not possible to get refund for that day.
7.9 Good
Pros: Good location
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The room had an electronic device with maps, available to borrow. I think this is a really excellent idea as not everyone will have access to wi-fi when moving around the city. The hotel also had a sauna/hot bath which was a great way to relax after a long day. There was also a library with books/DVDs (unfortunately I did not have time to look at that, but it's a good idea for those who might be staying in the hotel for a few days).
Cons: Breakfast was good, but it would have been great to have a few more options (e.g. cereals).
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Staff is very friendly, courteous, and helpful. The rooms have some almost antique-like radios in them which are tuned to nice stations. The rooms are very quiet. Breakfast has enough variety it is easy to find something you enjoy. I was happy I stayed at Hotel Nagano Avenue.
Cons: The beds are a little hard for me, but I was still able to sleep well.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Overall the hotel was better then the average booking.com review led me to believe. Room was comfortable and quiet, location was walking distance to the main train station and room was clean and functional. Staff were very good, I felt like a valued customer.
Cons: The toilet was blocked and overflowed on first use. But the staff were very good and sorted it out promptly.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I loved the familiar atmosphere and the welcoming the hosts offered us. The private onsens are amazing, the breakfast was home made and great. Kono-さん and his family were warm and welcoming and we couldn't have asked for more.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The Hotel Nagano was close to Nagano Station and provided an extremely convenient spot for the price. I needed a last-minute place to stay since my AirBnB booking in Tokyo fell through. It was walking distance to the Zenkoji Temple. The staff were extremely generous and kind, even though there was a bit of a language barrier. I would definitely go again. Clean rooms, too. :)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Reasonable close to the station Friendly staff Easy check in Baggage storage before / after checking in / out Coffee machines Ice cream vending machine
Cons: The window of my room wasn't facing the great view of the city.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The onsen was great for relaxing after travelling.
Cons: The hotel is a bit of a walk from the train station.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff was very helpful. The room was quite big and they give you a cellphone with data to use. Super recommendable.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: There are two large communal baths on two upper floors There is convenience store right next to the hotel
Cons: "Laundry bag" is actually dry cleaning bag. From my point of view, dry cleaning and laundry are two completely separate things. Wish the bag wasn't mislabeled. It was nice to have my old t-shirts professionally cleaned, like some top tier suit, but entirely unnecessary, Air condition controls are pretty dated - just "more power, less power" buttons. No temperature control.

9.2 Excellent
Pros: The food is exceptional, would return to stay again.
Cons: Could be warmer but it was expected in the middle of winter.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Very helpful and friendly owner and staff. When I arrived at 6p.m., all neighbouring restaurants were closed (off season). Although I had not booked a meal, they still arranged delicious (vegetarian!) food for me. Beautiful 150 years old ryokan. Spacious rooms. 24-hour hot tub.
7.9 Good
Pros: Location is fantastic. Quiet. No tourists. Really Japanese. Free onsen in the hotel. Good wifi speed. Ski storage - hot enough to dry the liners and gloves. Free parking nearby. Japanese breakfast. Cafe (hand filtered Hario coffee) just in front of the house. Roomy rooms - lots of space.
Cons: In winter - the hotel is rather cold. One of the rooms very cold. No hangers in the rooms. Only Japanese breakfast - not acceptable for everyone but we liked it. No coffee for the breakfast - it is available for additional money after 8:30.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The staff were very sweet, and I got to pet a black shiba inu. I wish I could have stayed longer. It was really nice to have a kotatsu on the cold winter night.
7.5 Good
Pros: The property itself was okay. staff was nice and friendly and accommodating. room was private and there were nice restaurants and a cafe. The room was clean.
Cons: the room was very cold and temperature regulation a little difficult. Walls were very thin.

Cons: No convenience store around here.

Pros: How close it was to the train station
Cons: the building was not as clean as it could have been

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Rooms smaller than expected
5.0 Okay
Pros: value for money in almost 5 star facility
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The hotel itself is nice and very centrally located. The breakfast was well stocked and included a variety of options, both Western and Japanese. The room I stayed in was a single, and it was a typical Japan-sized single, with a bed, desk, and small cushioned reading chair. There is free wifi throughout the hotel, and it seemed to work just fine for my needs.
Cons: For the total value offered, it was a bit of a pricey place to stay, but overall I was happy I chose to stay here; it was centrally located to a conference I was attending and to Nagano Station and the rest of downtown.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: 5 minutes walk from Nagano station. The rooms are quite big for japan standards. One day i left the DND sign and went out, came back with a bag to replace everything for the room (towerls, amenities, and even tea bags!).
Cons: Aircon seems unable to keep the temperature set, which was awkward. Just too cold to not use the blanket, and too warm under the blanket hahaha
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Loved the Onsen.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Comfy everything! And convenient location too, short walk from Kanazawa Station, near Lawson, Starbucks, 7-11 :) they serve full breakfast in the morning. The coffee was just ok, which is again liveable because it's free ;)
Cons: I didn't know how to operate the aircon because it was in Japanese. I tried to press all buttons and set the temperature but nothing happened. But then again I didn't ask or call the reception so actually my fault. Maybe put some English instructions also?
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location of the hotel is really close to the station. The bed was comfortable but I wish they can add one more pillow :) the breakfast was really good. I enjoyed the waffle with maple sauce
