9.0 Excellent
Pros: Kind of Bohemian, very sincere people run this place. Very friendly. It’s an old place and so kind of oddly laid out but it has what you need in a nice neighborhood.
Cons: Well, the ‘bread’ they sold was like granite, basically not fit for human consumption but I think Japanese have difficulty with the whole idea of bread. Steep stairs would be difficult do some people.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: It's a great hostel, a caring and sharing place where it's all about getting together. Some real, good coffee in the early mornings.
Cons: I don't care that there's only one shower for example, it's such a lovely place.

Pros: My family and I spent 3 days at Oshi Ryokan over the New Year Holiday and we had an absolutely amazing experience! Oshi and his wife, as well as other staff, were wonderful and their hospitality was top notch. Oshi went above and beyond to help my family feel comfortable, as it was my mom’s first time visiting Japan. He helped us with directions, drove us to the nearby ski lodge (so fun!), prepared delicious meals for breakfast and lunch along with his wife, helped with special requests, and even provided a power outlet converter for my mom to use during her trip! Really awesome hosts and they both speak wonderful English :) We would definitely love to come back for another visit!

Pros: The location near the shrine was brilliant. The breakfast was magnificent. Arriving to a fresh pot of tea in your room was luxury. Getting used to sleeping mats is interesting at first, but worked wonderfully.
Cons: There was nothing to dislike. Note the stairs down to breakfast are steep.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It is a very Japanese style hotel. It is comfortable and it is very close to the temple. The neighborhood is really nice.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Loved the staff, location, and breakfast and dinner!
9.0 Excellent
Pros: This is our second time to say here. The Location is very close to an old Japanese temple. The young lady at check in is wonderful & extremely helpful as is the mature gentleman at check out he gives out biscuits & sweets to you as well. The building is very old but has a magical vibe about it but there is no lift, also some people need to share some bathroom facilities. The heated pool downstairs is not big so time your use ...more than three guys makes for 'tight' soaking. Parking is around the corner but was included. If you prefer Tatami style rooms a great place to stay.

Pros: Location was great, just across Nagano Station.
Cons: Room heater was difficult to use, had to ask front desk to help change language setting from Jap to Eng. Even then, I woke up in the middle of night a couple of times, each time either feeling too hot or too cold because the heater control panel seemed to have a mind of its own.

Cons: When leaving the room we can feel the cold temperature in winter time
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The room was very traditional old style Japanese, extremely comfortable bed Lovely friendly couple who run it
Cons: Everything was great
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is the second time we’ve stayed at Chuokan Shimizuya Ryokan and once again we had a lovely time. The ryokan itself is attractive and such fun to stay in as a tourist. Yes there are a few stairs but it’s part of the charm. The shower room has an onsen in which is so relaxing at the end of the day. The room we had was spacious and we were cosy in our beds. The best thing about this place however are the owners. They are so friendly and sweet and they make you feel like royalty! They speak little English but nobody should expect this I feel and it’s easy enough to get along without language! Highly recommend if you want an authentic stay with owners who are true hosts.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Comfortable room in a quiet ryokan. The location is very convenient for visiting Zenkoji, which is about 5 minutes' walk, otherwise it's around 15 minutes' walk to Nagano Station. I particularly enjoyed the public bath, which is very relaxing after a long day.
Cons: Communication was a little difficult before the stay, but everything else was fine.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This place is such a fun and authentic place to stay in Nagano. The rooms are spacious and super cozy, and the older couple that run it are amazing hosts. I would highly recommend staying here over a hotel in the area. Plus it’s close to zenkoji temple which is great to explore at night. Also, make sure to get the Japanese breakfast
6.3 Good
Pros: Futon was comfortable.
Cons: Very steep steps; No help with luggage ; did not show how to use room facility eg heating; Did not acknowledge message to them via booking.com ; Booked half board but they did not fulfil it . Only 1 unit of Shared toilet .
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent location close to the big temple! Traditional old ryokan with a cute little onsen. The couple who run the place are kind and helpful.
Cons: Many stairs! We had one of the rooms at the top so we had to go down a floor to use the WC. Onsen was on the ground floor.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Charming elderly couple who were so welcoming despite not speaking any English!

6.0 Good
Pros: The staff is really friendly, with free breakfast and warm beds. Is really nice they have lounge, so the travellers can interacting with each other.
Cons: Only one bathroom and toilet for everyone.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff, location, and general vibe were a standout. The place as seen from the pictures has a lovely cottage-y atmosphere with all these cute wall illustrations around the place, which made for adorable, random surprises. The staff were very helpful and informative; one guy told us about the special temple services and where to find good coffee and food. Said temple was a short walk away and the main shopping strip was close by, which made it easy to get to and from the main station. Beds/rooms were cozy and homey, I could even open the curtain on my bed to see into my friends' bunk (which was cool but weird). Bathrooms were nice (but downstairs) and even had warmed seats and cute little bathroom slippers.
Cons: Nothing to complain about, if I had to pick something it would be that it's a little cramped in the rooms to store bags etc, so if you've got big/multiple bags then you're SOL. Obviously no elevator which wasn't really a problem b/c there's only 2 floors but the stairs were pretty steep which felt a bit scary sometimes.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Location. Friendly staff.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: I loved the vibe of the living-room so much, also they have a good selection of sake. It’s an old japanese house but so lovely. I totally recommend this hostel!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Nice, friendly, and knowledgeable staff. The curtains on the beds were nice for privacy and to keep the light out. It was cool that the building was a refurbished 100 year old building and so fit the aesthetic of the surrounding area which was near Zenkoji Temple.
Cons: There is only one bathroom and one shower, but that never really factored into our stay.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Very nice staff and good location for visiting the city.

5.0 Okay
Pros: Prefect location across from the train station (difficult to find - see below how to find it). Clean and tidy and modern. Plenty of hotel amenities and extras for guests eg tea bags, comb, toothbrush etc I recommend this place for overnight stays en route to the snow resorts.
Cons: Very difficult to find, but I had been here before so knew where to go. You need to take the pedestrian bridge from upper floor of Midori department store to exit the station complex, go past the Don Quixote store and around the right side of the building, past the ski/outdoor shop, to enter the doors to the elevator. 5th floor is the lobby. The rooms are tiny. No where to put luggage at all, so the bags took up just about all the floor space. No shelving at all above you to put any clothes on. One side desk only. It is really on overnight stop, not a hotel if you want to spend a few days in Nagano as you simply have no room to move inside your room. Fit for our purpose though so we will stay here again if we come through Nagano.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: value and location is just great
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Lots different restaurant at lower floor and adjacent to Nagano shinkansen station.
8.0 Excellent
Cons: Double bed was quite small, but this was clear from the booking so it was expected
7.9 Good
Pros: Very clean. Good location
Cons: Check in is done by electronic kiosk. Very confusing and a bad customer experience. Not sure why they do this while 3 staff stand around doing nothing. Not everything lends itself to automation. No reason for this and made me irritated right away.
7.1 Good
Pros: Location
Cons: Rooms were incredibly the tiny
5.0 Okay
Pros: Our room was too small for a family of 4. Double bed and no space for anything
Cons: Location close to the train station and close to everything
10.0 Excellent

8.3 Excellent
Pros: Good location
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Amazing view from our room - (that felt like a suite!), overlooking the mountains. We had a small couch area in our room, so when our children came into our room we could all comfortably be together. Biggest room we had in Japan- great bathroom too. Excellent assistance on how to visit the snow monkeys, they provided extensive easy to understand maps of where to catch the bus etc. Would definitely return to this hotel if in Nagano again. Easy walk to the Zenkoji Temple.
Cons: The managing check in staff member, and older gentleman was a bit pushy about us visiting the hotel restaurant.
