10.0 Excellent
Pros: Having stayed in a high-end ryokan the previous night, we wanted to be a little more budget conscious. This place had caught my eye as it had a picture of Golden Retrievers on their marketing photos, and looked to be very family friendly. These turn out to be the owners' dogs, and they were a HUGE hit with my children, as were the Christmas decorations, which were already in place. This is a western style purpose-built Pension, with large family rooms and ensuite toilets. Possibly about 8 rooms in total. We had 4 single beds in our room, and still lots of extra space for a small sofa and a tv. The beds were very comfortable, with heavy duvets to keep out the cold. There was a heater in the room, but we turned it off at night and had a slight breeze coming in. Everyone slept very well. There was a shared indoor onsen, and an outdoor onsen (rotenburo), a few metres walk into the garden. This was available for private use only, and on a first come, first served basis. Max 30/45 mins per family. It was lovely, with landscaping and a view of the autumn foliage. Heaven. The day we arrived heralded the first snowfall, so it was much colder than we had expected, and totally thrilling for us all to see the autumn leaves AND snow at the same time. The owners, a young couple with their first baby, had this establishment running like clockwork. The wife and her mother are the chefs, and we had the most incredible dinner, with soup, bread, rice, roast chicken, grilled fish with cream sauce, salad, dessert, and a lovely bottle of white wine (additional charge). Most residents were families with small children, and the children all got together to play games after the meal. It was an incredibly friendly and inviting place. Breakfast the next morning was also huge and delicious, so all in all, an unexpectedly wonderful find. We noted that the ski slopes were very close by, and plan to make a return visit there later in the winter.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything about the place - the wonderful and generous hosts, the onsen facilities with the amazing view of Mt. Tanigawa, and the exquisite meals (the kaiseki dinner was one of the best meals we've had in Japan). To top it all, the father of the family, a Shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) master builder and player, performed before the guest after dinner. Moreover, the Ryokan surroundings in the lovely Tanigawa onsen village is perfectly located if you plan on hiking in the Minakami area.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A lot of thought has obviously gone into this amazing property, from the private hydrogen bath to the Michelin standard food to the beautiful decor. The owner loves his job and it shows. We've stayed in ryokan that cost much more and weren't half as comfortable or stylish
Cons: Absolutely nothing

7.5 Good
Pros: Very peaceful, room was well-appointed, breakfast was lovely.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The ryokan is nestled in the verdant Gunma countryside. Surrounded by beautiful nature, the Rokan's remote location does not negatively impact the overall experience. Rooms in beautiful japanese design, some more some less traditional, make not only for a pleasant experience, but also for great pictures (Instagram). The food is great and provides a great value for its price. If you are on the fence on booking this ryokan, click that book button, you will not regret it.
Cons: The pick up times from the station should be more in tune with the train schedule

10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was a wonderful start to our 12 day easter vacation in Japan, with an onsen mountain experience of peace and relaxation. Arriving in the morning ,with 7 hour jetlag, we made our way by taking trains from Narita airport to Tokyo and further north to Gunma area. The hotel came to pick us at the local train station in a small shuttlebus. Then we were shown into their large lounge and served te and enjoyed the mountain view. It was a wonderful introduction to traditional Japanese life style. We had 3 rooms all with japanese furniture. 1 room had a private onsen hot bath in the room, the other 2 rooms had private toilets and then shared the use of the large onsen bath, which had a choice of 2 hot baths inside and 2 outsides. ( seperat bathes for women and men ) All our our rooms had large windows with a wonderful view af the river, forest and the snow-covered Tanigawa-dake / Mount Tanigawa. The food and service was an special experience. By staying 2 nights, we enjoyed 2 different Japanese dinners, with numerous courses, served in our own dining room, with many esquiste details, everything arranged and served with respect for tradition, beauty and taste. We enjoyed one Japanese breakfast and one western breakfast. We were the only european guests, but the hotel was busy with Japanese guests. All the personel went out of there way to communicate and make us happy. They were very helpful and kind towards our 1 year old. Some of us took a visit to the top of mountain Tanigawa, and the rest visited a neighbor town to participate in the Nurmata Sakura festival with blooming cherry trees.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything about our stay at Minakamisansou was great. The staff, environment and private Onsen were great, but the authentic food was the highlight.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: - Room was very spacious, clean and came with a lot of furnishings that made our stay very comfortable, our favourite was the in-ground kotatsu that was great for lounging around. - The view that looked out into the hills and forest from the room was awesome and made our mornings very serene. - Breakfast and dinner were both Japanese Kaiseki and were delicious and very filling. - Staff were very hospitable, attentive and did whatever they could to make our stay as pleasant as possible. - Both the in-room open-air onsen and the public onsen were amazing (However, it was hotter compared to others places). - They provided complimentary self-service coffee which was V60 drip coffee where you'd grind your beans fresh and pour hot water over it, it was actually pretty tasty. - A good place to stay if you're planning on exploring the area via car (we went snowboarding at a few nearby snow resorts), there's a lot of outdoors activities to be done in Minakami.
Cons: - The room we stayed in had a faint smell of cigarette smoke, which I'm guessing they allowed smoking in our room previously. - It would be hard to get around the area if you don't have a car.
10.0 Excellent

Pros: Big room with private open hot spring bath
Cons: Onsen was too hot

Pros: The rooms were very roomy and comfortable and the onsens were amazing. Also the option of private onsen is always a plus. Lots of snacks and beverages available.
Cons: The dinner provided could have been a little better, however it was only around 1200yen so this could have been due to miscommunication and translation issues.
5.4 Okay
Pros: It was a decent ryokan for the price, but not much more.
Cons: The staff clearly treated guests differently, which didn't bother us too much, but was still a bit weird.

Featured amenities include a 24-hour front desk, luggage storage, and an elevator. A train station pick-up service is provided at no charge, and free self parking is available onsite.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great rooms, absolutely wonderful onsen, very friendly and attentive staff who speak english very well, tattoos are allowed, food was good
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Location and staff were amazing
Cons: I didn’t like that all patrons were required to cover up because of the number of foreign visitors, which is not the traditional way. This should be optional not required. The building is a little tired and could do with some more thorough maintenance, a deep clean and a coat of paint.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: 24 outdoor onsen facility
Cons: Some areas of the hotel got a bit cold
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The location is special, on the hot springs in nature. Built and managed in Japanese traditional style, the guest dress is a Yukata, and the furnishings and rooms are in the original style: dividing the rooms by paper walls, low table and chairs, and sleeping is on mattresses on the floor. The hotel has three dining rooms, one with buffet, which also includes more Western-style food (for the benefit of children). One is a restaurant, and the third is divided into private rooms and serves Japanese-flavored multi-course food. Aesthetic and delicious. The staff is nice and helpful. Speak English.
Cons: The hotel is far from the nearest town and difficult to drive without a vehicle. The hotel has a shuttle that drives guests to the town several times a day, but if missed it is very difficult to leave. A little pricey
3.3 Mediocre
Pros: Staff was helpful and friendly but that’s the only positive thing, our expectations were not met.
Cons: Rooms and common areas are not well maintained and do not feel comfortable. Rooms as well as private and shared bathrooms have not been updated for decades. We didn’t use our bathroom as far as possible as it was very unpleasant. The water from the sink had a bad smell. In addition, the served breakfast and dinner (buffet) focuses on quantity instead of quality. Even the outside bath (the Onsen), which is the only reason why people come here, could be better maintained, for example the sitting area above one bath which was very dirty and used as storage and the drying machines were disgusting. Lonely Planet and other guides should recommend other Onsen Ryokans that are better managed. If you still want to go here, make it a day trip only without staying over night.
6.0 Good
Pros: The Onsen was amazing
Cons: The room was old and needed renovating and the food could have been better

Pros: Great place for winter sports lovers with amazing ski-to-door setting. Superb dinner and lovely Japanese breakfast were both included into the room rate. Fantastic open air onsen experience. Still a bit overpriced overall, given there was no single discount for ski rentals/lifts or anything else (except shuttle bus to the station).

8.3 Excellent
Pros: This hotel has free bikes to borrow to ride into the cute town. The mountains around it are beautiful. The onsen is nice though didn't provide conditioner. The massage chairs are great!
Cons: It was a little pricey for a family room, particularly considering we did not get meals. The room was very large though and had it's own little kitchen.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Service,food
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Yumotokan is by far the best place I have stayed in Japan on this trip. While it may not appear like a traditional 5 star hotel, this is a very old style guest house, the service is 5 star, and I felt I was getting the true Japanese experience. The staff were exceptionally kind, and I forgot to order a meal at the time of booking. I did so on the day, and it was not problem. I am a vegan and again it was not a problem at all. The meal was the absolute best I have had in Japan, home cooked with wild vegetables from the area. It was amazing. Breakfast was again incredibly delicious. Very traditional Japanese food.
Cons: It was absolutely perfect, no complaints! I wish I could have stayed longer. I will definitely go again to this beautiful guesthouse. The onsen was fantastic. The food was absolutely delicious. Nothing was a problem at all for the staff and the owner for us, they went out of their way to make us feel comfortable, and very welcome!
7.9 Good
Pros: I like the onsen itself and the room and also the food
Cons: Nothing
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The owner is very kind and helpful. They cooked special dinner for us and drove us to Takumi Sato due to raining by his own car and help us negotiation for free luggage deposit.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Friendly & politely staff.
Cons: Room, facility, snow & ski, service mind of staff, breakfast & dinner and friendly staff.
4.2 Okay
Pros: The only thing I liked is that it is located right in front the lift. And I should say that this resort is really picturesque in a winter time.
Cons: Awful hotel! The worst experience in Japan. Looks very old, ragged rooms and halls, towels have a strange smell - much better on the pictures that it has on Booking. Also difficult to get in you have no car - we took a taxi at the railway station, but on the way back it was impossible to arrange a taxi and they have just 2 transfers a day. Bathroom was tiny and didn't look very clean. And the price! A few days later we stayed at 5* hotel in the center of Tokyo which was cheaper than Sunbird.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Good onsen, nice view, very nice staff
Cons: Staff can not speak English.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were exceedingly helpful and seemed to enjoy being able to help in any way they could. The private onsens were beautiful and great after boarding. Attached ski field is relatively small but ideal for those with younger children. Other fields are close by and the staff recommended a dogsled tour (1hr) at a nearby field which was really fun.

Pros: The hotel is a holiday on its own, very nice I loved every moment inside.
Cons: They did not get the message to collect us from the station so we had to pay bus fare and walk far with our luggage
7.5 Good
Pros: Great view for onsen
Cons: A little bit far from public transit
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff did their best to help us get around and a few that could speak English were friendly
7.9 Good
Pros: Friendly hotel staff, large hot springs in the hotel, close to the centre of Minakami, shuttle bus goes from and to the hotel.
Cons: Minakami itself is past its golden age. It's still a nice place to go to for hot springs and sporting activities, however it has quite a few abandoned/derelict buildings ruining the feel of the place.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: We had a pleasant stay and enjoyed the onsen. There are three public baths from which you have a more or less beautiful view on the river directly beneath. We had a japanese style room and everything was clean. The breakfast buffet was amazing with a lot of different choices (japanese / western).
Cons: nothing really if anything, the facilities are not the newest anymore.
6.3 Good
Pros: Another of the reception staff was very helpful and river is beautiful. Private onsen was nice.
Cons: Public Onsens were not available to people with tattoos and first room a/c was broken and we had to move all of our stuff from one room to the next without any help again. Doesn't seem to be geared to cater for foreign tourists. The outside terrace was serverely dilapidated hence could not go outside. one of the reception was not particularly helpful and at times seemed rude. There was no restaurant service when we went for as hoc meals and lunch so had to go to family mart.
7.9 Good
Pros: The breakfast was great, and the location next to the river is nice. The onsens have lots of selection, but many of them are showing their age.
