10.0 Excellent
Pros: The ryokan was beautiful. The staff was incredibly nice and helpful. They didn’t speak much English but made sure to answer any questions/address any needs. Directly outside the hotel was a beautiful nature walk. There wasn’t much in the town, but we weren’t there for the town so it was fine. It was a lovely, relaxing few days.

Pros: One of the best Ryokan visits we've ever done. Right from the start, the staff was kind, helpful and professional. The building is new and well maintained, Onsen baths are amazing and you can complementary reserve a private Onsen. The Kaiseki dinner and breakfast were tasty and abundant as well.
Cons: The location is perhaps a bit hard to get to but the hotel provides a free shuttle bus from JR KagaOnsen station. Be sure to reserve yours at least 3 days in advance.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This ryokan was traditional in its physical structure, setting, and hospitality. The food was excellent with traditional Japanese kaiseki dinners and a Japanese breakfast. The dining rooms were beautifully done.
7.5 Good
Pros: nice view
Cons: Open air onsen pool abit too small
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Great service and beautiful ambience with lots of local handicrafts embedded within the fabric of the place. Food was great too, especially with the option to choose between a Western and Japanese set meals. The lunch set was very thoughtful for those on a 2 or more nights stay.
Cons: The carpet of the entrance to the room could be cleaner. Stains on sofa not removed. The other parts of the room was spotless though.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Nice decoration of lobby and room. Dinner and breakfast are SUPER great! Staff speak English well!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: All the kit provided, loads of towels bathroom stuff and the private hot baths. Food in the terriaki was excellent. Free electric bikes let you visit the surrounding hills without effort.
Cons: Western style breakfast was good but the same everyday. Had one dinner in the sister hotel as part of the package - the tempura was a bit grim
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very clean and very welcoming by the staff! Would stay here again!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The ryokan is spacious. Both the public and the private baths are good. The room is nice and comfortable.
Cons: The half-board breakfast and dinner are just so so, but acceptable.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Our stay here was excellent and we loved every luxurious moment! The staff were wonderful, they made the stay really memorable. We were the only non Japanese nationals that we could see at the hotel, even when we ventured out into the town, which added to the rural Japanese experience, and despite the lack of apparent western tourism( and our ignorance of the language) we had no trouble communicating with the ever patient and resourceful staff. The outdoor onsens were spectacular. It wasn’t snowing during our stay mid December but the crisp air and outdoor setting made for an unforgettable experience (book the private onsen for a romantic couple soak under the stars, one of our trip highlights). The facilities in the public and private onsen were above and beyond, with vanities, massage chairs and refreshments. The food choices were incredible. Other than drinks, we didn’t spend a cent during our night stay. We were given coupons for treats and experiences in the town and a choice of dining options for breakfast and dinner each night. The food was incredibly high quality, cooked by skilled chefs, each meal was an amazing experience, plus they knew it was my birthday and had a cake for my husband and I to share! I was very touched, especially a I was celebrating away from my family.
Cons: It is quite out of the way, I imagine this is why it’s not over run by tourists, but the shuttle from the train station makes it incredibly easy to get to and from major transport.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The food is too much, even they have "all you can eat" for dinner menu. Onsen is very nice!

Pros: staffs are friendly, helpful and polite. Good varieties of onsens to experience with. Some in-house activities like making onsen egg is interesting. Rent a car for few hours from hotel is a good way for sightseeing.
Cons: Restaurant dinner operationg hour is too late, at 8.30pm.

Pros: Good service, nice onsen and big room
Cons: Breakfast
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent friendly staff and wonderful variety of onsen baths. Meals were top notch with fresh seafood and inventive presentation.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Many different baths
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The hot spring and the related facility is very good. The hotel staff and the provided shuttle service are great. I stayed 3 nights at Kanazawa and detour to Kaga onsen for the last night and it was not a good move. Not because the hotel but there are not much to see in that town. Maybe I did not do enough study before I go. In my opinion, if you like to enjoy an onsen village, Kinosaki or Unazukionsen are better choice.
Cons: The neighborhood has not much interesting staffs. The hotel does not have restaurant. For the guests who do not have dinner plan, they need to go out to eat. Maybe it is sunday or low season or both, I did not have many choices.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Close to bus stop to go to the Kakusenkei Gorge and Kagaonsen train station, looks quite chic, has big in-house shops selling food and souvenirs, and just very hospitable people
Cons: Most staff speak limited English. Lucky to have one check in counter guy who does speak some and was able to understand my request.

Pros: Room, excellent food, great onsen shopping for wife, onsen eggs and many others

4.6 Okay
Pros: The staff were very attentive and helpful. The outdoor onsen was nice.
Cons: The hotel is dated and badly needs a renovation. Looks tattered in the room and in public areas. The food at dinner was very bad quality and didn't seem freshly cooked. Breakfast was better. Hotel seems like it is struggling when we went. Big and empty.

Pros: We enjoyed everything about this ryokan. The staff were lovely, the room was beautiful and comfortable, the food was excellent. We booked a private bath and that was good. Didnt have enough time to visit the public bath. We enjoyed wandering around in our kimonos.
Cons: Nothing
6.7 Good
Pros: Nice ambience while maintaining traditional ryokan feel. Unique dishes served at meals which opens the taste buds to new experience. Top score for staff.
Cons: Traditional ambience doesn’t go with sparkling new facility, would probably need a refresh in some areas. Nice touch with the balcony but the windows open right up into the main kitchen ventilator.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The staffs were really friendly and polite.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Nice hotel, a bit old-fashioned but nevertheless charming. Very nice and helpful staff. The room was spacious, diner and breakfast were delicious. The onsen are really beautiful (especially the one with the outdoor bath) and agreeable. We had the chance to be there during the week, so there were little customers. We had a very relaxing stay.
Cons: Bad surprise for us: access to the hotel's onsens is forbidden to people with tattoos... We were lucky that the private onsens were free on the day we were there, otherwise it would have ruined our stay. Also our bathroom was a bit smelly.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly and helpful staff. Recommended various dinner options for us to choose.
Cons: Limited power points for charging handphones

7.5 Good
Pros: Clean room & great surroundimgs. Outdoor onsen nice.
3.8 Mediocre
Pros: The room space is large
Cons: Terrible service. They don't provide English service and made ZERO effort in communication with customers who don't speak Japanese. The staffs never care about customers' experience. Give ambiguous instructions on dining in the resort. Lastly, the Onsen is too small and not warm enough.

6.3 Good
Pros: The staff was really kind and helpful. The free shuttle from Kaga Onsen station was also really helpful. The room was spacious and well decorated. The meals were delicious, we really enjoyed what was served. The onsens were nice too.
Cons: It was not really clean : spider web in the toilet, bathroom a bit dirty. We got a room with a pretty strong smell of tobacco. We had a room with a view on the river but the river bank was dirty : plastic bags, cans...
5.4 Okay
Pros: The hot springs are as advertised - we stayed in a room with an en-suite spa and it overlooked the river - truly special and relaxing. The food was pretty good, though stronger in presentation than in flavor. Staff was hospitable and kind, and the nearby town is charming and an easy walk from the property.
Cons: The upkeep and cleanliness of the room was bad enough to put a significant damper on our experience, especially at the high price point. The walls were moldy (black mold), smudged, and stained. The spare blankets they provided were stained. Though the center of the floor was reasonably clean, things like window latches and corners were crusted over with years-old dust and grime. Furniture was chipped and peeling. The spa area has loose floorboards - when we stepped near the tub, a patch of boards actually fell out from beneath our feet and we were lucky not to have been injured or to have damaged the tub’s hoses. It was enough to prevent you from feeling at ease. This place is in need of renovation.
6.7 Good
Pros: Staff is courteous and helpful
Cons: Not easy to find the hotel
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Hot springs, good traditional Japanese hospitality services, great food
Cons: N.a.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: This was a great place to stay! It was a bit far from Kaga Onsen Station, but they had a shuttle service available, which made transport very easy. What impressed my friends and I the most was how willing the staff was to accommodate us. I am unable to eat certain meats and another is a vegetarian. However, we were both able to have a delicious dinner and breakfast without worry. My vegetarian friend quite enjoyed the potato soup! =)
Cons: Everything was great... but we did see a bug in the dressing area, which was a little off putting. =(
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Room was large and comfortable with a river view. service was excellent. They took care of us from the moment our car arrive on the property. It was raining and they run out to our car with umbrella.
Cons: It has a dated Hallway.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Property is very nice with onsen room which includes everything from makeup remover to body scrub. The bathroom is clean and the staff was very nice to include my name at the door to welcome us to the property
Cons: The location will be hard to access if you don't have a car

10.0 Excellent
Pros: We had a wonderful stay at the Kagari Kisshotei. The staff was superhelpful and friendly towards all of us, and the children (6, 9 and 12) i particular. We had a lovely and extremely Instagram-friendly stroll alongside the river down to the town center, where we visited the public bath-house(s). Many small shops on the way back, but sadly we had no time to stop in any of them. Would have loved to stay longer to explore the nearby surroundings and pathways in the montains. Dinner and breakfast: Fantastic!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We love everything in the hotel, from the room facilities to the magnificent view to the mountain and the small river to the meals we had (dinner and breakfast) and all the staffs. The thing we like the most is the wonderful Japanese-course style dinner which is really filling. Seafood are really fresh and the tastes are very nice. We would like to send the special thanks to Hirota and Akari for the great assistance at our dinner and the friendliness that are really a pull factor for return guests. We will definitely stay here again if we go back to Yamanaka.

5.0 Okay
Cons: The garden was lovely.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Everything is OK
Cons: Some dinning staffs are not friendly
9.6 Excellent
Pros: We stayed in a room with a private outdoor bath and it was absolutely fabulous! The room was bigger than we expected and looked stunning. The massage chair was a great cherry on the top.
Cons: According to the information on booking.com (as well as on the ryokan's webpage), we were supposed to have access to ryokan's lounge club. When I asked at the reception about its opening hours, I was greeted with an awkward look and was informed that I don't have the right type of room to gain club access. After a short conversation I gave up because the situation was quite embarassing for me. I speak Japanese so that was not the issue. Also all the restaurants we were recommended for dinner were closed that day - it was their regular day off which I would expect the concierge to know. So we ended up walking for quite a while in search of a place to eat. In the end it was for the best because we ended up in a tiny yaki tori place with quirky and cheerful mama and had a great evening talking to locals :) These are of course minor problems which I'm mentioning only because ryokan staff hospitability and helpfulness always exceed my expectations.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Excellent butler services, started with choices of food for the dinner/breakfast, to timing arrangement/reminder, to taxi services..... You can feel all the details are being taken good care. I left a vast jacket in the room and realized it after arriving Tokyo. I phoned the hotel and the staff was very helpful, and immediately arranged the courier to be sent to my next stop. Thanks a lot!
Cons: Nil
10.0 Excellent

Room was very spacious complete with all the room amenities and the outdoor bath was really nice. Love the massage chair in the room especially after a nice soak in the hot bath! The lady at the souvenir store was a real legend, she is 68 years old but still looking young and beautiful, spoke pretty good English and introduced us to all the local delights while we shop waiting for the 9pm drum performance in the Hotel. Overall an excellent place for family!

6.7 Good
Pros: Friendly staff
Cons: Location very inconvenient. Facility a bit too old
8.8 Excellent
Pros: We chose one of the rooms with its own bath, and it was among the best bath experiences I've ever had. Right outside the main room is a veranda with wood panels on all sides, a small shower and a big stone bath with constantly warm water. Laying there, listening to the rain pouring or the crickets singing is pure bliss. Together with among the best personnel I've met in a hotel and huge dinners in the room the experience is one I will not soon forget. Visit the local pottery if you are staying a while in Japan (it takes 5 or so days before it's finished after you have painted); they will send your finished goods with Kuroneko to your hotel wherever you are in Japan.
Cons: The hotel is old, which in itself is a point of charm, but may deter some. The hotel is not in the nearby town, it's only a short way away, but that way is a stone staircase that will not be an easy traverse for disabled or elderly visitors. The hotel will help with transportation to and from the train station and to and from the village.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Staff was very welcoming, helpful, and pleasant.
Cons: The hotel was clearly once a grand place, but now much of the facility feels old and run down.
6.0 Good
Pros: The rooms with private dining and onsen was very beautiful.
Cons: The lobby area definitely needs some improvement but like a faded courtesan showed an elegant past.
