Travelers who want to get the most out of the sunshine and summer vibes should consider renting a convertible, as the weather on Zakynthos is splendid during the summer. As the streets on the island are not pristine in all places and the villages and cities are narrow in most parts, renting a compact car is recommended.
All speed limits are posted in kilometers per hour on Zakynthos and general regulations permit 50 km/h (31 mph) in residential areas. On rural roads, up to 90 km/h (65 mph) is generally allowed but, due to the winding roads on Zakynthos, it is not advised to go faster than 60 km/h (37 mph).
Petrol in Europe is generally more expensive and is measured in liters. The average price for one liter in Zakynthos is €1.55 ($1.76, which means approximately $7.04 per gallon). Make sure to familiarize yourself with what kind of petrol is required for the hire car and refill the tank before venturing out to the remote beaches, especially on the western side of the island, as it has less infrastructure and therefore fewer petrol stations.
The easiest way to secure a parking spot for your hire car is by opting for an accommodation with a parking spot included. When driving into Zante city, there is a car park next to the port that may be your best bet to score a spot. The beaches usually have parking lots as well.
