Boot cover missing.Car was a Kia Sportage, nice car, easy to drive. Staff all helpful and friendly. Would use them again.Rear cover was missing in the boot. Wasn't noticed on pickup and only noticed on return. I thought it had been left out because they get stollen or damaged? Cruise control would have been nice to have on the car.

Staff were very friendly and polite. Vehicle was in good condition.Although the booking had been made correctly by my company and the card payment details were provided, I had to leave my personal credit card details as security before the vehicle was released to me. I then had to return the following day with my company secretary to avoid being charged twice for the booking. A very inconvenient experience, as this involved a 50k round trip to the airport. The booking was for a SUV, but the vehicle provided turned out to be a 4wd pick-up truck with a hard cover at the back, no luxury features and no built-in GPS system, which was disappointing considering the price we paid.

$300 USD for a scratched plastic hub cap!Was charged $300 USD for a scratched plastic hub cap. Will be disputing the charge via my credit card, and will spread the word about never renting from Thrifty anywhere in the world.

We were not welcomed at the car park, in fact we were ignored on pickup and return. Taking a carrolla I expected a decent amount of power.going up hills required frequent use of first gear. On returning the car, we should have received the charges. A week later, I have not seen the final bill.

Top tips for hiring a car in Durban

  • South Africa’s third largest city sits along the coast of the Indian Ocean and is a prominent destination for tourism. The best way to explore the long stretch of coastline and its beaches is with car hire in Durban, which affords you the flexibility and convenience of setting your own travel schedule without being limited by the scope of public transport. Richards Bay (170 miles north via N2) is popular site for canoeing and surfing, while the sights of capital Johannesburg lie about 567 miles north-west via the N3.
  • King Shaka International Airport (DUR) is the closest (22 miles) major air transit hub to the city centre and is the most practical location for securing a hire car in Durban if you’re flying into the region. The Car Hire Centre has a good selection of providers, like Thrifty, Dollar and Budget, where you can pick up your reserved vehicle or obtain one on the fly. To find them, follow the directions to the southern exit of the terminal building along Boulevard Road leading to the Car Rental Parking area.
  • With a population of over 3 million, Durban is a dynamic city with major maritime, air and road links and an enormous amount of vehicular and cycle traffic daily. During morning or evening rush hour periods and the early afternoon hours, you can expect major congestion inbound and outbound along primary roads (M4, M10 and R102) flowing through the city centre. Additionally, there will be a tremendous amount of pedestrian traffic due to the number of educational institutions and the high volume of visiting tourists from in the city centre from November-December.
  • The morning traffic rush in Durban usually begins about 06:00, peaks around 07:00 and eases around 08:30, while the evening rush begins about 15:30 and tails off around 17:30. Areas to avoid during these times are the busy M4/R102 interchange near the Grey Street Complex as well as the massive 165 cross-change between the districts of Berea West and Bonela. Be advised that interior streets are also highly active during weekdays, which will causee traffic delays in many areas.
