Top tips for hiring a car in Bogotá
- To get to some of the more charming cities around Bogota, you’ll need a hire car. Drive to El Infernito (known as Little Hell) or spend the day touring Chingaza National Natural Park (an ideal place for nature lovers). On your drive, you will have many opportunities to take pictures of the mountains and catch a glimpse of different wildlife.
- When visiting Bogota, you’ll fly into the El Dorado International Airport. Recognized as one of the busiest airports in the country, it is truly efficient and provides many amenities for travelers, including an area for hire car companies right inside the terminal. You’ll only need to walk a short distance to the lot to pick up or return your hire car.
- There are numerous toll roads throughout Bogota and all of Colombia. Because their tolls are not generally automated, you’ll need to have cash and coins handy. Be sure to keep the money out of sight, however, so as not to tempt thieves.
- Bogota is said to be one of the most congested cities in terms of traffic. However, this applies mostly to the business districts and the center of town. If you want to avoid traffic jams altogether, it would be best to stay off of roads during rush hour. This is between the hours of 6 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., and 3 p.m. until as late as 6:30 p.m.

Got to the airport and was told there were no cars available. Of course the fly by night local car company booth next to budget was happy to help. I think it’s a racket. 1. They force me to buy their insurance , if not they will charge 2000 dollars to my credit card , although I have bougth insurance thru allianze already . 2. They make me sign a blank boucher , but i already get their insurance , its not good . 3. The car could not be used due to trafic restrictions in Bogota , it was a waste of money . 4. When i went to return the car they were expecting to returned washed , its s rental car and i have never have to do it . 5. They tried to keep the blank boucher with the excuse that they need it for administrative reason , i took it because it not theirs .
