Damaged VehiclePros: not muchCons: I rented this full SUV vehicle but got shorted since the back seats would not fold or operate. The Avis tech tried to fix it but was unsuccessful. They promised that they will find me a replacement vehicle and replace the once I rented withing couple of hours. They never even called. I was stuck with this care for the whole week and AVIS-Beirut refused to discount the rate when I returned. It is a big ripoff operation.

Pros: Very courteous staff. Walked around the car with me to inspect it before I took it. Called me a few hours before drop off to ask for the time I was planning to return the car in order to meet me. I did not have to return it to any parking. They just met me in front of the airport and took the car from me.

Top tips for hiring a car in Beirut

  • As a visitor to this small Lebanese city, rent a car rather than relying on the slow and crowded public buses. With the Mediterranean on one side and the mountains on the other, you can enjoy the freedom of exploring Beirut’s sights by car. Drive north in your hire car to discover Jbeil, one of Lebanon’s oldest districts.
  • Excited to rent a car on your Beirut vacation? If you fly into Beirut–Rafic Hariri International Airport, you will find only one terminal with four floors. The car hire desks are located on level one of the arrivals hall. There is also a Meet & Greet Service in the arrivals hall for car hire companies located off-site.
  • As a first-time driver in Beirut, you must remember to drive on the right side of the road and pass on the left. It’s acceptable to use your horn to alert other drivers and pedestrians when you’re passing. Driving around Beirut can be a bit of a challenge due to the lack of street names, and there is also limited lighting on some roads.
  • Beirut’s main rush hour is between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm. If you drive along Corniche el Mazraa you can expect heavy traffic, especially in the morning, from 9:00 am to 10:00 am, as well as in the afternoon, around 2:00 pm until 6:00 pm. It’s best to completely avoid driving into the city on a Sunday evening. If you plan on driving to the mountains, avoid traveling on a Friday evening or a Saturday morning.
  • Book your rental car in Beirut at least 2 weeks before your trip in order to get a below-average price

FAQs about hiring a car in Beirut

  • The average price of fuel in Beirut is $6.61 per litre over the past 30 days. Filling up a tank of fuel costs between $79 and $106, depending on the car size.

  • Take a look at our extensive car rental location map to find the best rental cars near you.

  • Beirut features mainly large, four-lane highways that suit a wide range of vehicle sizes. As the city is quite hilly, renting an intermediate or standard car would be ideal for all types of roads and driving conditions. If you want to take a trip out to the coast or mountains you should opt for a spacious, comfortable SUV.

  • The speed limits in Beirut are 31 mph in urban areas and the city center, while the limit is 62 mph on major highways and rural roads. When you are driving along Beirut’s roads, you must look out for mobile speed traps manned by the police -- it’s best to stick to the speed limit to play it safe.

  • When it comes to filling up your hire car in Beirut, expect to pay more. Petrolis over 30% more expensive to buy in Lebanon, than in the USA. In Lebanon, the average petrol price is 1285 ل.ل. per liter compared to the higher price of 1740 ل.ل. in Beirut. With the flexibility and comfort that a hire car can provide, however, it is certainly worth it.

  • Generally, Lebanese drivers tend to park anywhere, with double parking being very common. However, it’s best to park in managed parking lots with attendants. Within Beirut you will find multi-story and off-street parking lots as well valet parking at most hotels and restaurants. On-street parking usually has a maximum duration of 2 hours. A great place to park is on the Martyrs' square, under Beirut Souks. Hamra Street and the surrounding area also has many parking options.
