If you want to stay in a moderately-priced hotel in Hamra, stay here
I've tried staying in a hotel on Hamra for under $100 before (Marble Tower) and I regretted it as soon as I stepped foot in the room, so I was very careful picking 309. But, it was clean when I walked in, and the room was a modest size. The location is good, just behind AUB, so it's easy to get around. The staff is nice and mostly speaking English. If you're on a budget stay here.
It's perfectly nice, just not great. I still ended up checking back into the Crowne Plaza, but if you can manage to stay at a perfectly good place, the 309 is just fine. A couple of downsides, the room door didn't automatically close. The WiFi was slow. Other than that, a perfectly good hotel if you're on a budget but still want to be near Hamra Street. Though Hamra Street isn't what it used to be, it's super commercial and generic now, with cheap chain stores everywhere.
With a stay at Three ONine Urban House in Beirut (Hamra), you'll be steps from Hamra Street and 4 minutes by foot from American University of Beirut. Featured amenities include a 24-hour business center, dry cleaning/laundry services, and a 24-hour front desk. A roundtrip airport shuttle is provided for a surcharge (available 24 hours), and self parking (subject to charges) is available onsite.
