5.1 Okay
Pros: The Onsen (spa) was quite nice. It was very quiet.
Cons: We took this hotel because everything else was booked out. We didn't know that it is a golf hotel and that it is very far from the actual town Aso. The staff had no clue about activities outside the hotel and could hardly speak any English. This hotel is good if you are above 50, have a car and want to play golf. Otherwise it's too far away from town and has very poor connection to public transport.
6.7 Good
Cons: Beds were very uncomfortable and hard to sleep on.
6.7 Good
Pros: A lot of parking space. Onsen is good
Cons: The resort needs renovation. Usually hotels in Japan are spotless but here is an exceptional case. When you switch the light you can see the tracks of towel on the mirror. Toilet stinks. The receptionist is polite (in a city way) ,which is okay, just the contrast is big compared with all receptionists I met in Kirishima and Miyazaki.
6.0 Good
Pros: Hotel located in a park like golf club. Quiet natural setting.
Cons: Hotel's dinner was buffet style. A rather high price vs overall quality. Rather strange elementary school style plates. Famed beef was a bit too well done and disappointing really as compared to a previous restaurant. Arrived at hotel about 1:15p. Attempted to check in and drop off bags before sightseeing. Were directed to an area to wait for someone to inform when check in was ready. After 20 minutes in uncomfortable chairs, further inquiry informed need to wait for another 90 minutes until 3:00pm. It's the official time and no one is allowed to check in before that time.... Poor communications at it's best.
6.3 Good
Pros: Very nice onsen Good breakfast with beautiful view Very nice staff Comfortable beds
Cons: Bathroom in the room was very old, very bad humid smell. We have decided not to use it and used the onsen instead
9.2 Excellent
Cons: Hot spring is not clean. There are bugs inside.
7.0 Good
Pros: Golf-course hotel, good for a night's stay traveling in the Mt Aso national park area. Good half-board buffet dinner and breakfast. Every room comes with a view. Relaxing onsen
Cons: housekeeping was a little sloppy - used towel in bathrooms, eye-drops on top of cupboards. This could have been an over-sight as the hotel is large with many tourists.
7.1 Good
Pros: The dinner is really amazing. It worth the money.
Cons: The room is too small. Only one staff can communicate in English. The pajama for us going to the hot spring is really terrible. It is a blouse and trouser suit look like what a workman worn. Only one size is offered despite different size of customers. Even worse, only one suit is offered for each hotel customer. We are not allowed to replace a clean one with our dirty one on hand.
6.7 Good
Pros: The onsen is great, rooms are spacious, the breakfast buffet with panoramic view on the caldera is very nice. Also, the hotel is located quite close to the road up to the crater of the volcano.
Cons: The staff at the reception weren't as friendly as we are used to in Japan. In fact, they came across as a bit arrogant. Only the people working in the restaurant and cleaning were friendly and polite. Also, there was a distinct seventies vibe in the building. Not particularly homy. As I read later on Tripadvisor, one of the guests described it as 'slightly institutional'. Maybe that's the right description for this hotel.

Pros: Private onsen was very good and breakfast spread was excellent. They have yukata rental and event space with table tennis and game stalls in the night. Wonderful view of the mountain range.
Cons: Room needs renovating and tatami floor was stained. Town area was very quiet with not many shops and gets dark at night but safe.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Wonderful and hearty breakfast. Very nice private family Ibsen.
7.0 Good
Pros: The bath on our patio...the meat at dinner
Cons: I left a pants and belt in the drawer under the bed, notified you, but you said you could not mail them to me in the U.S. or get them to Tokyo before I left today

3.0 Mediocre

Cons: Smoking smell is strong in the room even hotel sent someone to spray around. It is not really work.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Bus stop for heading kurokawa onsen and Hakata is right in front of the hotel door, so we don't need to rush for the bus back to hakata in the early morning. The view form the room is incredible, as beautiful as the postcard picture. you can enjoy your tea or Aso milk next to the window. The outdoor onsen is closed due to the snow, bus the indoor onsen still make me feel relaxing. there is various choice of food in the breakfast buffet .
Cons: The Tatami smell strong, but not making me feel bad, fresh spray is provided in the room. they serve horse oil shampoo in the onsen area, don't really like that, cause it makes my hair arid.

Pros: The hot spring is wonderful.
Cons: The hotel is short on the staff & improperly service.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Overall, this is one of my greatest ryokan where I stayed and I want to stay again. All the staffs are very friendly and kind and the room was old but really clean.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great service and such a welcoming staff. We got a little tour up to a great viewing point by one of the employees because we still had some time till our bus came. He was so welcoming and charming and i can only say that about the whole staff. We felt so welcomed there and had an amazing time. The Ryokan is a little up a road away from the center, but that means it also has a great view to some trees and a field and has such a calming atmosphere. Being there in the rain was such a pleasure! I got a full vegetarian breakfast after I wrote them and I was very happy with it (for any vegetarians out there)!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Only one night stay, I hope I can stay longer. I feel the onsen water is much better than anywhere else, since I can see the salt and the smell is strong. I don’t need to use body lotion, the skin is so moisture. Very close to the shopping street and the lantern lake. The bus stop is not far away, but hotel still provide the pick up service.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Very kind and helpful staff! Delicious dinner and breakfast. Beatiful little mountainvillage and scenery. Private onsen in Ryokan was very nice.
Cons: Hard mattress.

Cons: No private showers in the room
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It was a surprise for me that there are 6 private onsens for only the hotel guest, it was wonderful to have privacy. The public bath was huge and it was very nice. I like the lighting in the room cos it was warm white (more cozy) comparing to most of the traditional ryokans usually have bright white. The staffs are kind and helpful.
Cons: The courtesy of other tourists / guests , there were families with kids running around shouting and even the adults were loud in the public areas.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Various styles of onsen available for private occupancy.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: So nice to stay in a ryokan where they really look after you. They were very welcoming when we arrived and didn't seem to mind our noisy children. The traditional breakfast was great and so much food. The family onsen was also really lovely.
Cons: They should have a bit more information about how to travel around the local area. There are local buses but we had to look up the info on line so if they could have some timetables on hand that would be great for those that don't speak Japanese and aren't driving.
7.1 Good
Cons: There is only the outdoor bathroom which is not comfortable in winter.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Rustic and charming and the room was warm and cozy. Very nice staff. Comfortable bed. Outside bath and shower was great and beat enjoyed when not raining but offered private bath by the staff which was great!

Pros: Close to the station. Very friendly host!
Cons: We woke up in the middle of the night when a group came in with very loud voices...
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Our welcome was spectacular. Thick mattresses were great on the floor. Lots of rules which I didn't mind as it's hard to go wrong. Every thing was clean and nice.
Cons: Walls were really thin. Didn't have any curtains.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very clean
8.0 Excellent
Cons: Provide bath towels
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly staff, if you want a base in Aso to see the local volcanic region this would be perfect. We stayed here while the rugby was on as there was nowhere to stay near Oita so we didn't get to see too much of the local area, but it looked beautiful. Incredible thunderstorm on the first night! Purple lightning!
Cons: For a room in a guest house it wasn't as cheap as you would imagine. Thin walls, despite a curfew we were kept up by the neighbouring room. Due to high volcanic activity you couldn't go to the crater. There were only two of us, so it was fine, but the booking said room for 4 and it was only 2.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: a rusric country with friendly atmosphere.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: I felt comfortable at Guest House Asora. The hostess has contributed to this, giving me a lot of information about the region. One evening she cooked for me and other guests. Just like a friendly gesture. Also her very nice coworker gave me specific tips and took me to a family village festival. She also showed me the way to the remote restaurant, run by the owner of the guest house. Also good food there!

Cons: Nothing. I really love here and want to stay again.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very clean, authentic yet modern, onsens were lovely especially the outdoor one. Attention to detail was outstanding. Highly recommend the Japanese dinner. Yukiko Umiko our hostess was very friendly and we appreciated her Japanese packed lunches. Would definitely return.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: - the location is not so good, but we were offered a taxi every day to Aso station - the Japanese house is typical and really offers a change. It is very peaceful and everyone is respectful - very nice staff, different from the Japanese people we had met before - laughing a lot and interested in cultural differences, as foreigners we felt welcome - the restaurant is traditional and very good, the menus are endless! - the bath is simple and relaxing - the heating works well
Cons: - the trash in our room was not picked up, but just asking for it would have sold this :) nothing bad to say, it really is an amazing experience!
9.0 Excellent

9.2 Excellent
Pros: - There are 4 private onsen. So I can choose one of them. I stayed 2 days, and I entered every onsen in ryokan. - I have tattoos, and in private onsen, that doesn’t matter. - The dinner was quite expensive but I can enjoy fresh meat and delicious food. Thanks for all kind staff.
Cons: - Because of earthquake, you have to move by bus from Kumamoto. But it’s not Ryokan’s problem.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owner is extremely hospitable. She is able to communicate in English and is very friendly. When we checked in, she prepared a Japanese snack and a cup of green tea for us. The whole place is decorated with a very Japanese feeling. The room was spacious and the heater was working well. The private onsens are very comfortable and can be assessed whenever it’s not occupied. The open onsen was a bit cold to go to in January but it warms you up almost immediately. Breakfast is super rich with a great variety of food. When we left, the owner prepared us rice balls and we really appreciated that.
Cons: The place is located a bit far from the JR station. It is also located in a fairly quiet neighbourhood. It was hard to find a restaurant that was still open though it was just 7pm. Therefore for people who do not drive or do not want to cover long distance to hunt for food, I would say saying dinner at the place would be the best.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The most wonderful and generous staff, excellent onsen and delicious breakfast. Highly recommended.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Staff, food and outdoor onsen
Cons: Nothing

Pros: It was a surprise for me that there are 6 private onsens for only the hotel guest, it was wonderful to have privacy. The public bath was huge and it was very nice. I like the lighting in the room cos it was warm white (more cozy) comparing to most of the traditional ryokans usually have bright white. The staffs are kind and helpful.
Cons: The courtesy of other tourists / guests , there were families with kids running around shouting and even the adults were loud in the public areas.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Various styles of onsen available for private occupancy.
