Competing with a world of anonymous hotel rooms from the big brands with the size to change room prices by the hour, The Old Lamb struggles; It must be hard to remain commercially viable. It is located along the High Street in Theale and a 5-10 minute walk to the Railway Station, shops and restaurants. I paid £60 for a small double room. A fair price in my view considering the overheads that a business has without full occupancy (I may have been the only guest that night (not sure; I was certainly on my own for breakfast at 8.00am)). As I have mentioned, room 8 was a small double room and is located on the ground floor near the entrance. The accommodation is set back from the old Bath road and although I was nearest the road, it was silent. The bed was very comfortable although a bit short for me (6ft). The bathroom was nice and warm. Cold tap water was very cold and drinkable (nice). The electric shower worked just fine and was nice and hot. Soap, body wash and shampoo were available. Tea and Coffee making facilities were available in the room and the UHT milk was in-date. No biscuits but that was fine with me. I only had toast for breakfast but a choice of cereal and cooked breakfast was on offer together with various fruit juices, tea and coffee. I met two members of staff (owners?) both of whom were very pleasant. Since I appreciate and respect people who are trying their best in a very competitive world, I would definitely stay here again.
Everyone wants to know this so here it is... In room 8, the radiator in the bedroom does not work. The bathroom radiator is on full. Both have broken thermostatic valves. At least it was that way around; I can sleep in a cold room and appreciate a warm bathroom! There was an electric radiator in the bedroom to take the chill off and so no complaint here, just an observation. Although there was 15" flat screen TV in the room, it would not pick up any signal and so (effectively) it was pointless other than to occupy 10 minutes of my time. No loss as an early night was a bonus. Nothing serious.
My room was small and had two single beds. It was clean and very warm, which I was extremely grateful on a cold, blustery February night. The rooms are in a separate block at the back of the main building on two levels. If you are disabled, ask for a ground apartment. There is a large car park. The lovely thatched main building was a pub long ago and built c. 1642. The dining room with its wonderful inglenook fireplace and original fire-back is worth staying a night.
No disabled parking space. No welcoming biscuits. Stingy on tea bags and milk.
