Location is excellent. Rooms clean and comfortable. Wonderful breakfast.
If you've followed my reviews you'll know that I like the Mercure properties quite a bit, with the Berlin Checkpoint Charlie location being an incredibly comfortable and lovely hotel. We had high expectations heading into Munich after the Berlin visit. The lobby and "shared" area of the Munchen Altstadt location unfortunately is tiny, dated, and outside of the counter and a couple of vending machines, nonexistent. It's a more expensive city and the buildings had limited room outside of guest rooms. Not a big deal. The hotel didn't have a similar setup as Berlin with a two-room family suite. Instead we reserved two rooms side by side, one with two beds and one configured for one bed. The beds were actually two twins that had side tables on rails to allow for easy reconfiguration! This was very helpful. The rooms are small but sufficient - bed, desk, TV mounted on the wall above a dresser/utility area (which did include a refrigerator!) and a nice sized bathroom with excellent water pressure. The air conditioning works, but having a desk fan is an improvement! The breakfast, while not as extensive as the Berlin breakfast (and it does not offer custom egg/omelette orders like Berlin), is still among the larger offerings we had on the trip, the quality of the food was excellent, and the breakfast room was huge! The best part of this hotel was the staff. We made a comment to the management to note how excellent everyone was. They provided us a fan, ran up extra pillows and such, and when they only had one pillow available they put the second on our door handle waiting for us while we were out for the day. Just above and beyond. The location is perfect. Steps to Marienplatz and the heart of Munich. The public parking garage is literally around the corner. And better - while it's inside the ring road, it's barely so, so getting out when you need to is a snap. No driving through the heart of the city center.
Unlike the Berlin Checkpoint Charlie hotel, the hotel's entrance, situated on a side street rather than the main street entrance they have (but that room is used for the breakfast room -- missed opportunity? Turn that into the lobby and a small bar area, and use the current lobby for breakfast?), is dated and drab. At first it was a disappointment, especially after the beautiful interior of the Berlin location. The rooms weren't as dated as the Berlin room so that's a plus. The breakfast room - lots of windows looking at the main street the hotel building abuts - can get very warm and often either doesn't have AC running or it is insufficient. Get a table near the tall windows and open one. The breakfast doesn't offer custom egg orders like in Berlin, so if you've a lactose issue, stick to the hard boiled eggs. The rooms are small and expensive! But they're comfortable and functional.
Breakfast was AMAZING and the location did not disappoint.
The air conditioning was the best - kept the room cool enough to sleep well! Breakfast was excellent - great variety of eggs, meats, cheeses, fruits, & pastries - especially the chocolate croissants! We enjoyed the proximity to the Marienplatz.
The rooms were small.
We really liked your hotel. It has a beautiful location, a nice room, a good bathroom and absolute cleanliness. Great breakfast with freshly squeezed orange juice made by an amazing machine... Various types of coffee and tea are offered in the room. Bottled water, juices and Coca-Cola are also offered in the minibar. We know many hotels but it was the first time this happened to us! All the reception staff are very friendly and helpful. At checkout we were met by Ms. Mersiha Durgutovic who was especially nice. We thank you all for your kindness.
Everything went very well and nothing displeased us.
