Top tips for hiring a car in Granada
- Granada has many amazing attractions to offer, from very old ones like the Alhambra to very new ones like the Parque de las Ciencias (a science park). Spread all over the city, the best way to explore each of the many sights is by renting your own four wheels. Don’t rely on the timetables of public transport and discover the beauty of Granada on your own terms. The Cumbres Verdes and Sierra Nevada are also not far away, only a 30-minute or 50-minute car ride, respectively.
- Granada International Airport is located about 11 miles from Granada’s center, which is why it is best to pick up a car directly from the airport’s onsite agencies. Via the A-92, travelers will be in Granada in half an hour by car. The hire service desks are located in the main arrivals hall and include companies like Europcar, Avis, and Budget.
- The old center of Granada is made up of narrow roads and, unless you have a special permit from your hotel, the old center is only accessible to locals and public transport. Inquire at the hire agency and your hotel to make sure you don’t enter the zones accidentally, as cameras are in place and fines can be enforced. Since the street system can be confusing in Granada with ring roads circulating around the city, renting a GPS system with your car is recommended.
- Unlike many other European countries, most of the freeways in Spain and around Granada are toll-free, and drivers can use them to quickly get around, which makes Spain the perfect country for a road trip. There are a few toll freeways, but they are around bigger cities like Madrid or Malaga and marked with a “P” after the usual “A,” which designates a freeway. Pickup was a horrendous experience. I've always been able to grab a car earlier than my reservation time. I understand it’s ultimately based off availability, so when the front desk attendant told me I couldn't get it sooner than one hour before my reservation time, I was okay with that. That was until I was assigned a car which had been clearly sitting on the lot before I arrived - a complete waste of my time. I usually pay for car rental insurance through 3rd party vendors, which is always fine. But for some reason, the front desk attendant told me I wasn't insured. I said I was and just paid it through Kayak (at $27), and he said that my file says I did not pay and had to pay Avis if I wanted the car insured. I dug through my emails and showed him the receipt proving I was insured through the reservation, and he tells me that it only covers changing the reservation. When I downloaded the PDF and showed that I was actually insured for damages to the vehicle up to $40,000, he said they didn't accept Allianz anyways and I had to cancel with them and pay Avis 90 euros to protect my car against damages. I told him that it didn’t make sense for Kayak to offer insurance that Avis wouldn’t accept and asked if he could tell me about their policies with 3rd party rentals. He said he doesn't have that information (could be true but still a reflection on Avis having terrible training policies - insurance is a big/complicated deal and their front desk attendants should understand the ins and outs of it) and goes on to say the car is only protected if I purchase through Avis. I obliged as I was tired of going back and forth and trusted that he knew more than I did being that he is an actual Avis employee. After doing some research, it sounds like I would have been fine through Allianz. This is incredibly disappointing as I feel I was manipulated through scare tactics to fork over more money for an already overpriced reservation. He also knew I was traveling into Portugal, and offered no help or assistance in regards to potential tolls, bridge fees, etc. All he seemed to car about was making me pay more and trying to spend as little time as possible providing actual customer service.8.0 Very Good

Staff was friendly. Pick up location was convenient. Car was ready and clean and easy to drive.Cons:
At pick-up we were charged an extra 69 euro fees on top of the $72 in fees already paid. Adding up to about $150 to the base car rental fee for a 4 day rental. (Base rate was $120. We actually paid closer to $300 total) The break down apparently was a 40 euro fee to drop off at a different location. Plus some 21% tax that added up to 29 euro. The other $72 was a $18 “taxes and fees” per day. I found it to be deceptive pricing on Hertz’s part.4.4 Mediocre
