KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Fort-de-France

  • When it comes to car hire in Fort-de-France, you'll find that this is the best option for transport in the city and beats using public transport which though available and consistently improving, can be a burden when having to wait for buses to get around. You’ll have all the freedom to drive around the city and explore other areas of Martinique Island and not have to rely on bus schedules. From here, you can reach plenty of other places such as Le Robert across the island which takes around 25 minutes to drive.
  • If you’re thinking about car hire in Fort-de-France, then hiring a car from one of several car hire agencies at the airport is the only way to do it. Martinique International Airport is the one place on the island that has car hire offices, and you’ll be able to find them easily once you’ve arrived and managed to collect your luggage. The offices of 11 different providers are located opposite the terminal building in Parking Zone P1.
  • In Port-de-France and Martinique in general, you’ll find a lot of windy roads to contend with. Being a mountainous island, you’ll also have to go up and down a lot of hills, so be careful when taking on such roads especially if you’re not used to them. In addition, the city has various roads with speed bumps that sometimes can be difficult to distinguish especially at night, as they are very similar to standard pedestrian crossings. So, keep your eyes peeled and drive safely.
  • For Port-de-France car hire, when driving around the city and particularly outside the city, it’s recommended to avoid driving at night during the weekends. Purely because streets tend to be busier with people going out and enjoying themselves while local drivers tend to speed around a lot more and drive in a more aggressive way. You’ll find that main streets are well lit but other smaller roads may have poor lighting, making it tricky to navigate.
  • Small rental cars in Fort-de-France are around 53% cheaper than other car types, on average

There are many mountainous and country roads to tackle, and an SUV’s control and traction will help with those particular adventures. Also, when visiting all the beaches the island has to offer an SUV is perfect especially when packing things for the road trips.

  • What’s the speed limit in Port-de-France?

Like many places, you’ll find that there are various speed limits that you will have to abide by when driving in Martinique. When driving round urban and built-up areas such as Port-de-France, you cannot exceed 50 km/h, while further out on rural roads you can drive up to 90 km/h and once you’re on a motorway, the speed limit is 110 km/h. If you're caught speeding by law enforcement or speed cameras, you can receive a hefty fine so be mindful of this.

  • Where are the best places to park in Port-de-France?

Once you’ve sorted car hire in Port-de-France and have got your hands at the wheel, one thing to consider is where the best place to park is. Right in the centre of town, you can find a few parking areas with rates generally coming to around 6-7 € for 3 hours. This includes Lafcadio Hearn Car Park on Rue du Pave which also charges about 12.50 € for 24-hour parking. Though it has a limited number of spaces, the best place to park is the Renan Car Park as it’s free all week and is on Rue Victor Schoelcher a few blocks from the city’s marina.
