When we first arrived at the airport and made a phone call as per instructions no one picked up the phone call for four attempts which was rather a disconcerting when it was wet and cold and midnight. More explicit instructions about pick up point would have been helpful

Pros:

We did not like anything but the online booking process. The rest was painful.

Cons:

Our flight came in late and we missed the pick up window. I emailed Budget to let them know, but this message didn't get through to the rental location. When we picked up our car, the woman was not very friendly and said we missed our window and it was given away. She said they had no cars left for us. She did not give us other options of where to rent or what to do in this situation. She did not show sympathy either. Do not rent from Budget. We went with Europcar in the end. They were nice and had a great car for us (and their counter was right next to the Budget one).

Pros:

The car was decent, ran fine and fulfilled our needs. It was nothing special or out of the ordinary, just a basic Toyota Corolla, but it did the job.

Cons:

We could've used some instructions on pickup and return - in a foreign country we didn't know if processes would all be the same. A little disappointed that the car was a Corolla when we booked "Camry or similar" since the Camry really is a significantly nicer car.

Pros:

I left my cell phone in the vehicle and didn't notice until I was on the airplane. I called the Christchurch Budget office and explained the situation. Toni McLean, the Budget agent there, secured my phone and sent me instructions on how to get it back. She then processed the FedEx transaction and I received my phone without issue. This was awesome! Thanks Toni

Pros:

The pick up and drop off were both easy and we were happy to be upgraded to a nicer car when we picked it up in Christchurch. We loved the car and found it to be clean, comfortable, and smooth throughout our 8-day rental.

Cons:

When we dropped the car off in Queenstown, we were shocked to find that our receipt said we were charged more than 2x as much as my reservation said we would be paying. We were in a rush and didn't notice this until after we left the lot, so we called the Queenstown Budget office. Luckily, they fixed the issue and we were charged the correct amount. But it does seem that the issue originated with the Christchurch Budget, so that's why I'm only giving an 'Okay' rating.

Pros:

This car was the perfect size to travel around with. It was large enough for our luggage but small enough that it was easy to park.

Cons:

Returning the car in Queens town was a little confusing because finding parking is extremely difficult. We were told they had a designated parking space but not until after we went to return the car. It isn't signed and just looks like the access for an alley.

Pros:

My car was mechanically sound, the reservation, purchase process was easy.

Cons:

A poor value, and Hertz was difficult and inflexible. My Holden Captiva was a below-average car. Hertz charged $90 USD daily. Hertz also refused to accept my car at Queenstown vs. Christchurch when travel plans changed. Will try another agency next time.

I had to go back in 3 times b4 leaving with the rental. It would have been really easy for them to give me all information 1st time. I'm also still waiting on my $200 bond back and when I dropped it off a guy met me outside and told everything was fine away I go and tht the bond would be redirected to me. I found this procedure very strange.

This rental was the worst customer service experience of my life. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT BOOK WITH ECONOMY OR SCOTTIES. If I could give zero stars, I would. Kayak should drop this company immediately. While booking online, be warned, Economy serves as an umbrella company to many smaller companies in New Zealand. If you are unfortunate enough to have your reservation served by Scotties, be prepared for a terrible experience. In my case, after a flight arrival time change from 1000 to 1400, I called Scotties for a pickup (the only way to get picked up as they are not in the terminal and do not run a constant shuttle). After 2 calls and a 40 minute wait, the shuttle arrived and I was informed by the driver that my booking had been canceled (allegedly NZ law requires a company to only hold a reservation for 2 hours - other companies hold your car for 24 hrs), they had no additional cars available, they were sorry but they could not help me. There was no communication from the company that my reservation had been canceled despite them having access to my email, phone number, and the two phone calls I’d made upon arrival at the airport requesting to be picked up. Still in need of a car, I went online and booked a vehicle with Economy through Travelocity. My credit card was charged and I received a confirmation email at which point saw the company providing the car the was once again Scotties. I called again, now with a valid reservation in their required 2 hour window, and was told to wait 10-15 minutes, the shuttle was on the way. Again the shuttle arrived (35 minutes after the phone call) and again the shuttle driver refused to take me to their office stating that there had been a miscommunication and they did not have a car for me. I called the company back, (which was now the fourth long distance phone call for that day) they apologized for the inconvenience but offered no assistance or compensation for my time or troubles. I strongly recommend you never rent from “Economy” or Scotties. Their non-existent customer service is not worth the discounted prices for their vehicles. It’s a wonder a company like this stays in business. It’s quite obvious it’s terribly mismanaged and only makes me wonder the quality of the vehicles they rent to travelers. I most certainly will never book with them again and encourage others to do the same. There are several other options available that I highly recommend you explore. I ended up booking with Firefly, a partner company with Hertz and located in the terminal. Only slightly more expensive then Scotties, the car was ready as soon as I finished paying, the customer service was excellent, and there was no shuttle or long distance phone call required for pickup I emailed Scotties with a formal complaint and was answered with a shameful sarcastic response from Scott himself. They do not care the slightest bit about customer service. Avoid like the plage. Go elsewhere even if prices are higher.
