Comfortable beds, excellent Continental breakfast, small and friendly boutique style hotel right in the centre of Bergamo Alta. Air Con, well fitted bathroom and all very considered and clean.
Direction to hotel and explanation of parking arrangements could be better.
Up an unpromising flight of narrow stairs, this is a cosy and welcoming inn on a small street in the quaint old town on top of the hill. It was a bit more than we usually pay for a room (150 euros per night including breakfast), but worth it to be up in the old part of the city - especially when we saw the length of the queues for the funicular! The position of the hotel was great, very central. Our room had olde world charm - exposed ceiling beams and oak floors, padded headboard and big wooden mirrored wardrobes, but plenty of modern touches - double glazing, up to date luxury tiled bathroom, air con, good wi-fi, with a safe, fridge and kettle (one of only two hotels out of the eight in northern Italy that we stayed in on this trip to provide one). The view down into the street from three floors up was great and there was also a lovely view out from the back of the landing towards the hills. We had breakfast on a beautiful curtained balcony with a few small tables, cream chairs, cream linen, cream flowers - very tasteful. Very good continental breakfast buffet with home made granola, small dishes of various fresh fruits (yummy strawberries and cherries), yogurt, hard boiled eggs, meats and proper block cheeses, croissants, cakes and bread. Excellent coffee and hot chocolate.
Not really a dislike, but simply a consequence of the age of the property and its very central location, and useful to know. Parking is a couple of hundred metres away in a covered car park with reserved places for hotel guests and costs 20 euros per day (more than the cost per day of our hire car!) You can apparently drive to the hotel to drop your bags and then round to the car park, but the roads were very narrow and choked with pedestrians and we didn’t fancy trying to wheel our suitcases all that way over cobbles. So we simply left our suitcases in the car and each took just a rucksack with our overnight items. The only minuses - balancing the temperature of the water in the shower was very tricky and there was nowhere to put your soap/shampoo/etc except on a ledge at ankle level.
Staff was very helpful. Breakfast was excellent. We stayed in room 3 which was large and had a huge bath and shower. The location was great and I would definitely stay there again.
The room was a bit noisy from people partying in the cafe and street.
Charming old world hotel. Fantastic location and lovely attentive staff.
The breakfast was the major highlight. It always included a very high quality local produce, especially an excellent selection of cheeses (Branzi & Tallegio were our favourites) and cured meats. Also, we had a nice view from our room onto the Alps. The hotels has a unique character and is centrally located in Citta Alta, steps away from Piazza Vechia. The room was fairly large and well equipped.
We didn't really mind it, but there is a quite steep flight of stairs leading from the street entrance to the reception. Once you get there, there is an internal lift that can take to your floor.
With a stay at Hotel Piazza Vecchia in Bergamo (Citta Alta), you'll be steps from Palazzo della Ragione and Piazza Vecchia. Featured amenities include express check-in, express check-out, and dry cleaning/laundry services.
