The whole place is a little treasure! So pretty, characteristic and with a perfect view. Also, the area is pretty good.
A few ants in the building
It was a really great place! Lots of cool and quirky stuff around the hostel to have a look at. Excellent view from the room. Close to the train station and a really good kitchen to cook in, can't really fault it! I would recommend it to anyone visiting.
The place is really nice designed. And that is the sad part about it, as the management is so bad that they ruin what they have (see my negative points for our full experience). There are nice details and the view from our balcony was amazing!!
We had booked 5 nights. We arrived and there was no staff around and one of the other guests opened the door, gave us the key (after not knowing which room we were in) and left. No explanation nothing (but that was not a big deal). We had a double room with a really nice balcony and shared bathroom. That bathroom wasn't cleaned for the first two days of our stay and we could not use the kitchen, as it was overflowing with dirty dishes and was never cleaned by anyone. On the third morning other guests got into a loud fight because of this. We asked around for the owner/manager and the girl who was apparently the manager did not speak any English. She then went to get the owner and we told him, that the kitchen had not been cleaned and the bathroom trash can was running over with used toilet paper and the bathroom did stink. He mentioned, that he ran the place (I quote) "very informal" and the his guests were "badly educated" and it would not be his duty to clean it and there was no cleaner to do it. We said we will reflect this in our booking review and he immediately changed. He offered us money and a discount to not leave a bad review. We told him to just clean the bathroom and the kitchen. It was done already but we could feel the manager did hate us from that point. Every morning we came into the kitchen she demonstratively started to clean something. The last evening things escalated: I wanted to pay and went downstairs three times but did not find anyone. At 9pm the owner came up apparently thinking we did not want to pay (I do not know why). We talked about that the kitchen was fine the last three days but the bathroom again had not been cleaned, not even the again full trash taken out. Then his manager came up and went crazy. She insulted me as a "son of a b" and my girlfriend a "b".
The location is very good: the subway station is 5 minutes away, Vila Madelana is at 15 minutes walking distance and Jardins at 20 minutes. There are ATMS, a supermarket and lanchonetes within 5 minutes. The view from the room is great, and the hostel itself is nicely decorated. The shower works nicely with warm water.
There is no permanent staff around and the lady doesn't speak English. She is very nice though. The bedrooms get very cold during winter, it is not very isolated. On another note we found the others guest to not be so respectful: the last morning a guy stayed more than 30 minutes in the only bathroom of the first floor and the guests regularly let their dirty dishes around the kitchen.
