We tried to extend bring forward our booking but could not get the extra 4days required … even with an upgrade .. no cars avail Not enough staff Staff forgot to give us chains we had paid for - we had to come back and get them First car had no usb charger !! First got a stone chip - we returned and got charged $52 or so dollars - but did get to swap car

Pickup was bad. We were just told to sign the electronic keypad (wording small). Then we were handed keys and told to go out the door and get our car. There was NO ONE to inspect or go over the car (not the one we booked) with us anywhere! Two days after we picked up the car we received an email saying we had around an hour to take pictures of our rental and attach them. Too Late! We were not told that at the end we would have to pay extra $. The pickup guy was nice but off site due to staffing shortages. The drivers side of the car had no floor mat. Maybe that was the 200$ extra you charged us.

Liked the new low milage Rav4 we rented. Not happy about the fuel sercvice charge added to our bill. The car was not "topped off with fuel when we picked it up as I found out the first time I refueled and drove almost a 100 kilometers before the gauge appeared when I picked up the car. i returned the vehicle with at least as much fuel in it as when I picked it up

I did not enjoy this experience. Reception was unclean. Staff were unhelpful, argumentative and unfriendly. Also appeared to be untrained. It was slooooooooow. Staff were defensive - clearly I was not the first person that day who was reacting to the poor communication and system.

There was three people working but only one person manning a computer. Check-in per person takes about 20 minutes and there's lots of printing and signing paperwork. The car smelled like gasoline had been spilled in it, the infant car seat was broken and unable to be tightened and they were unable to provide a replacement! The second car in the party was not even available as they run on a thin margin of car availability and it hadn't been returned. When it was returned it had no gas (on empty with notification lights) and they refused to gas it. This car had about 60k miles on it and was in poor condition. Third rental car in the group battery died and had to be jumped to get back to the airport. Yay!

there was a bit of confusion around the pick up area at Queenstown airport not only for myself but another party as well. Clearer instructions need to be provided. The vehicle wasn't new with 108,000 km on the clock, but was in very good condition at a better price than some other main stream rentals. The business is quite literally run out of a container by a small family group who seemed to be rushing around cleaning vehicles as they were dropped off for the next customer, heane the vehicles weren't in spottlessly clean condition but nothing too major. The advertisement suggested the vehicles were at the airport, this is not the case, rather a shuttle to the far side of the airport only a 3 minute drive away. I would use them again as long as the price was right

They initially tried to supply us with a small Toyota Vitz instead of a Corolla. After checking our voucher they offered us a Corolla but would have to wait a couple of hours for cleaning, but we could take the Vitz in the meantime. We accepted this offer, but then they said they’d clean the car while we waited as it wouldn’t take very long as it had already been cleaned on the outside. After watching them quickly hoover the car for 5 minutes (not exactly a thorough clean considering the current pandemic) we took the car. Before leaving the “yard” we took photos of the car and nearly every panel had some form of damage on it, and it wasn’t particularly clean inside or out!

Rude customer service. Took over an hour for 3 people to pick up their vehicles, all of whom had issues with what was booked online vs what was available at pick up. The conformation email confirmed which credit cards were accepted but when i tried to pay, they rejected my credit card and just said no, not that one - even though it’s listed as accepted in the email. There are no facilities on site. No bathrooms, water or even a seat inside. There is a bench outside you could sit on. You are in a shipping container in the middle of a gravel pit. Our car was dirty. Greasy fingers all over the window screen and so dusty inside. It clearly hadn’t had a clean for a long time. Car was VERY basic. You might save $100 but it’s not worth the time, effort or delays created by staff would make it clear they would rather be anywhere else. Only positive would be that the car was a hybrid so driving all over for a long weekend only cost us $20 in petrol.

Bluetooth wasn’t working in car, had to drop off off car early but no place to drop keys off. Called when we arrived back home to let them know where keys were they said thank you, then got a call on a Sunday from a man yelling saying if we didn’t return the car we would be charged another day?!! Had to call him back letting him know what happened, got another call from him yelling again.. the experience was awful

We needed a late arrival and Scottie's was accommodating although a little confusing. The car was right where they said it would be and was clean and ran well.

Cons:

We swung by the office the next day to handle the paperwork. The office was open but no employees so we returned the following day to handle it. Glad we had been in town the extra day and our accommodations were near their office.

Economy Rent a Car (ERaC) turns out to be more of a broker and contracts other rental companies to provide cars. I arrive in Queenstown where I'm supposed to pick up my car at the terminal, but there is no counter for ERaC. I call the number, but I've been provided their Auckland number, and they tell me I have to call their Queenstown number. It's cold and rainy and I'm making phone calls instead of getting in my car. ERaC Queenstown inform me my car is provided by Scotty's and I have to call them. Scotty's says they are overbooked but they have arranged for another company, Hitch, to provide a car. A Hitch rep calls me and tells me to wait at the commercial car park. I wait. And wait. Then wait some more. A guy comes over and collects some other travelers. Now feeling quite cold, I message the driver and he asks where I am. After a while the guy who recently collected passengers comes over, he's apparently my driver. Turns out there are two commercial car parks and I'm at the 'wrong' one. Nu-huh, signs say otherwise. Now we ride for 10 mins to their office, a makeshift shack in a dirt parking lot. I wait for 25 minutes while he handles the other customers, talks on the phone and directs his staff. So, he doesn't have the car type I reserved but immediately offers to upsell me to a Prius. At this time I've been wasting my precious time in Queenstown and I want to get going, so I accept his offer. It's an extra USD50, but I figure I'll offset some of that with the Prius' better gas mileage. Turns out it's a six or so years old car with 70,000 miles on it, it's dirty and with plenty of nicks and scuffs and a big stain in the trunk. I can live with that, but asks if he has another compact car which is what I reserved. No, but he can give me a smaller car for the same price...I take the Prius. Later I notice that the tires are worn (unsafe in rain) and there is some smear on the inside of the windshield that causes a glare in the sun and other marks on the windows and windshield, similar to what car dealers do to write the price and year etc. It also has a Japanese language audio unit and the trip meter etc is also in Japanese. That's fine if you speak Japanese, but the majority of people visiting New Zealand don't, including me. It also makes a loud beep every time you start the car. The car lacks cruise control. However, the car didn't break down, it got good gas mileage and despite plenty of wet weather I didn't hydroplane with the worn tires. But I'll never use Economy Rent a Car again.
