When deciding on your Umea car hire, consider your itinerary and whether you will be spending time in the countryside surrounding the city. While you be able to reach the rural areas easily with an economy compact vehicle or sedan, you may want to enjoy the high performance of an SUV if travelling into the hilly regions. If you are planning on staying local or sticking to highways, you can find great choices of fuel-saving smaller cars that will be perfect for your holiday.
Umea observes speed limits in kilometres. Expect to drive a slow 30 km/h (19 mph) in zoned areas, such as near schools, 50 km/h (31 mph) when in the city, and 90 km/h (56 mph) on the expressway or main roads. When you take your car hire out on motorways, such as the E4 and E6, you can push the speed to 120 km/h (75 mph). Be aware that speeding fines in Sweden are hefty, and traffic officers take rule violations seriously.
The city is very modernised in terms of parking. You will find on-street parking that is charged for by zone. If you buy the most expensive zone permit, you can park in cheaper zones, but not the other way around. Umea is dotted with car parks across the city that include free and paid spots. Look for the famous Upab car parks. This is a large company that owns most of the parking lots in the city, and it is easy to purchase permits online. They have comprehensive maps offering times, zones, and fees. The average price per hour is 90 SEK (about 7 GBP).
Cons:I booked a car for 3 days at a good rate. On the second day I phoned Budget to extend for one day at the same rate. I was told "no problem". It turned out that extra day cost me as much as the other 3 days, but this was not mentioned on the phone. When I queried it they said it was because "no cars were available"! Why not tell me the true rate when I phoned, then I would not have extended?
Pros:Everything in the car was very clean and really nice car for driving. In advance though it would be good to let you know if it is automatic or not.
Cons:The only problem was that I could not pay with Maestro and could not pay cash as well.
