THE HOTEL The Waterhouse at South Bund, located on the banks of Shanghai's Huangpu River, inexorably raises the city's boutique hotel stakes, leaving its competitors trailing hopelessly behind. With magnificent views of the Pudong skyline, in an area where the city's quaint low-rise architectural heritage is still largely intact, the 19-room Waterhouse at South Bund prides itself on integrating into the traditional local environment while challenging its boundaries, distinguishing itself as an unforgettable experience. MADE BY ORIGINALS Loh Lik Peng, the Singaporean hotelier and restaurateur, was a former lawyer who fell into hospitality as if by accident. Today, his Unlisted Collection of unique, high-quality properties in Singapore, London, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and soon, Sydney, include seven design-driven boutique hotels and 20 restaurants to date. With a finger ever on the pulse, Loh operates cutting-edge hotels in heritage-listed buildings that integrate guests directly into the local scene and community. ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN Award-winning Neri&Hu Design and Research Office transformed the huge 1930s concrete shell, once a factory and the Japanese Army headquarters, into a bastion of conceptual, modern architecture. A synergy of the antique and the contemporary, the original rough façade of the building was maintained, with an imposing contemporary structural addition on the fourth floor reminiscent of the area’s dockland past. The conceptual blending of old and new is carried through to the dramatic interiors, where the raw, exposed industrial framework is offset by sleek architectural adaptations and contemporary furniture.
