If you're just traveling around the city of Tangier, a small, compact car is ideal for navigating the busy, narrow streets. But if you're embarking on a road trip across the country, an SUV or a four-wheel drive is recommended, especially if you're heading to the Atlas Mountains. If you're traveling with the whole family, consider a minivan.

The speed limit on rural roads is 100 km/h (62 mph) and on highways it is 120 km/h (74 mph). Be aware of the several police checkpoints throughout the country where you'll have to slow down.

There are very few places where you can park on the streets in Tangier, but a parking lot or garage will give you the safety of knowing an attendant will look after your vehicle, and rates are typically very low. If possible, pick a hotel that provides parking, such as Hôtel Rembrandt. You can also leave your car on the western end of Avenue Mohamed VI, at the old harbor near the medina.
