THE HOTEL In the heart of Manhattan, the landmark Gramercy Park Hotel has welcomed creative talents and distinguished guests for nearly a century. Each of the hotel’s 185 guest rooms and suites offers a unique composition of colors, textures, and original collections of art, photography, and custom handcrafted furnishings. These lavish sanctuaries feature hand-stitched leather-topped desks, deep red velvet curtains, mahogany English drinking cabinets, 400-thread-count Italian linens, marble vanities, and premium beauty products. Dine at Danny Meyer’s acclaimed Italian restaurant Maialino, or sip specialty cocktails under the soaring ceilings of the acclaimed Rose Bar. This modern take on a grand New York hotel boasts rooftop terrace event space with stunning views, as well as an exclusive key to Gramercy Park, Manhattan’s only private park. MADE BY ORIGINALS Inspired by the early 20th century’s aesthetics and craftsmanship, American artist Julian Schnabel served as art director and designer in his reimagination of the hotel with a painterly, undiluted color palette for every wall, curtain, and carpet. Brickwork is juxtaposed against untreated beams made from Douglas fir and walnut, and Baroque Louis XV chairs sit below a constantly changing collection of selected works of modern art, ensuring that guests enjoy a new memorable experience with each stay. With the exception of Damien Hirst, the collection is weighted toward contemporary American masters—including Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Enoc Perez, Keith Haring, and Tom Wesselmann—whose hallmarks include bold palettes, oversized imagery, the mixing of high and low culture, and unconventional materials. ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN The Gramercy Park Hotel was built in two stages: the first was completed in 1925 by architect Robert T. Lyons; the second in 1930 by architects Thompson & Churchill. The 18-story Renaissance Revival building was taken over in 2003 by Aby Rosen, who enlisted the talents of Schnabel and British architect John Pawson to create a visually exciting, warm, and comfortable hotel that delivers superior service. Pawson designed a new two-story limestone base and removed the existing second floor to create an inviting 20-foot lobby.
