Best London hotels near King's Cross
At Kimpton Fitzroy London, we have stories galore to tell. From the outside, the palatial 19th-century landmark building, which occupies a full block in Bloomsbury, looks the part of grande dame. Inside are contemporary creature comforts like roomy, art-filled suites with views over Russell Square, a cocktail bar that keeps the Negronis flowing, and a come-as-you-are coffee shop just steps from the Tube. All of these details beckon modern travelers to settle in and stay a while.

Pros: By far, one of my favorite hotels in London! Everything about this hotel is unique; its history, the posh interior design, the beautiful palm court and the (Burr and Co) cafe, where I have done some significant creative writtings. Never to mention the amazing staff who went above and beyond to ensure a personalized stay; I still remember my first stay here in January when I came to London to study at the UCL for the first time, the staff surprised me with a beautiful notebook and a pen; by far that was the most genuine thoughtful heartfelt gesture I have ever received from a 5-star Hotel staff! I will be forever a fan of this lovely place!

Pros: It was my 2nd stay. amazing every time. Fancy architecture above of all. Definitely land mark of Russel square. Great room condition, perfect location with kind staffs. I could check in earlier, with almost highest floor with park view.
Cons: Hotel brand has changed into Kimton from Principle, I felt their branding and facility are weakened a lot. Amenity became something visitors can’t take out, smart tv was not working, door greeting was not that sincere compare to before.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The whole hotel is beautiful and interesting, like something out of Upstairs, Downstairs. Our room was especially lovely, with a canopy bed, marble bathroom and all the amenities.
Cons: The cost of eating or drinking in the hotel was unbelievably high. We ate breakfast there one day but quickly learned that a Manger, nearby, had better food for much less money.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Bed was dreamy. Walk in shower had a marble bench in it. Turn down service wonderful.
Cons:
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff is great and the renovation has done a good job of preserving the grandeur of the old hotel.
Cons: Something lighter than a duvet for the bed, but I know that is the trend with all hotels. Guess they want their guests to roast.
7.0 Good
Pros: Beautiful common areas, very friendly staff. Rooms well appointed
Cons: Good lord the bathroom is SMALL. Was fine for day one, but by day 5 it was driving me bonkers. The door literally hit the toilet the space was so tight. No room for anything and was quite an acrobatic act trying to use that and the shower. Also, room wasn't as clean as it should have been. Slippers had a red stain on them (are they reused?). Same with the paper drink coaster + tea kettle. Clearly used recently, which was concerning. If they missed those simple things, what else is bad?

7.9 Good
Pros: Excellent breakfast although replenishing the bread board seemed to be an issue.
Cons: We booked a superior king room with walk-in shower which we did not get. However they did compensate with a late check-out. We travelled by Eurostar so stayed at the hotel twice, going and coming back. The first room had a walk-in shower and only lukewarm water and hardly any water coming from the sink- room on fifth floor. On the second visit the room was larger and more comfortable but with an irritatingly squint shower over the bath - room on ground floor.

Cons: Unfortunately every time I stayed in the hotel is worse than before, this year I stayed 4 times and every time I find it worse before !! For example:- 1- Upon arrival at 12:30 pm, the reception refused to hand me over to the room. I know check in must be 2 pm but my room ready why not give to me !?! 2 - the reception asked me a visa card (for deposit, I tried to pay cash but refused Im explain to him my point that I can not put the visa card but strongly refused to pay cash and insisted on taking the visa !! 3 - The price for breakfast 21 £ when booking from the restaurant, but when booking from the reception price 18 £ when I decided in the morning to pay through the reception was refused ! I can not pay only when the check that I can not change my mind !! 4 - I had 3 rooms in the hotel and one of them for the disabled I asked her an extra bed was rejected due to of security reason ! (After that the hotel manager enters and solves the problem) 5-Noise noise noise !! The hotel puts DJ in the lobby late at night !! (All people can go to the disco or bar if they want to I dont know why they need annoyed guests by hotel mangment !!

Pros: I was so looking forward to staying at this hotel because of the location and its boutique style but I was so disappointed in my room and more so the price I was charged to stay in what I can only describe as a prison cell shoe box. I paid £494 for 1 night. This did not include breakfast, it had no Tea or coffee facilities in the room because that is how small the room was, yet it had an espresso machine hidden in a wardrobe area so that area could have been utilized for a small kettle and full tea/coffee facilities. Even the Premier Inn make room for such amenities. To get a hot drink you had to walk down a corridor from your room to a pantry. Early on a morning and before a shower means you have to get ready just to go and get a refreshing morning drink to suit your personal choice. The bathroom had no area for me to put my wash or make up bag, I had to put down the toilet seat to place these whilst I was using the mirror to get ready. The pillows were so soft that your sleeping with your head on the mattress and for this boutique price tag, you most certainly should have the option of a firm or soft pillow. You could not swing a cat in this room and was so difficult opening a large suitcase to get your belongings out every time , then close it up just to have some floor space. The room overlooked the roof of Kingscross and had no view whatsoever. Whilst the room was quiet and the reception staff were very nice and accommodating by allowing me early access to the room as it was ready before normal check in, overall I felt ripped off with such a huge price tag and I would never stay at this hotel again. When paying such a high price tag for 1 night you dont feel the need to question the hotel in anyway and trust that it would meet this price level however I took it upon myself to review further due to my disappointment to find that on other nights they sell these rooms online for as little as £199. I would never book here again !

Pros: We were only there for an overnight after a long haul flight, but found the hotel to be comfortable and the breakfast excellent. The staff were considerate and helpful when we encountered a problem with our room.
Cons: The first room we were allocated had a pungent smell which meant we simply couldn't stay in it. We were then moved next door, only to find that once the window had been closed the same smell built up in the room. We only discovered this after an evening in the bar with our son, so were eventually moved at 11.30pm to an upgraded room. All a bit inconvenient, but the problem was well handled by staff and we eventually got a comfortable night's sleep.

Pros: GOOD
Cons: One staff at reception was unfriendly when i asked her about the access card was not working for lounge. I needed to take tea or breakfast. But rather than helping, she asked me to bring identity card etc. I had no time, so i left the hotel without breakfast. In the evening someone else helped me and urgently checked the card and rectified problem. I am surprised, if card was not working why the staff needed to see once again my passport etc which was in the room and i needed extra time to go to room and bring the passport to show her. when my card already was issued for the room, but had some issue at lounge access.

Pros: The bedroom was clean and tidy, the bathroom was very clean. The girl on the desk was very welcoming and the cleaners were also very friendly.
Cons: The bed headboard was worn out. On leaving we noticed the whole floor was being renovated. Therefore I'd imagine the bed would be replaced. All in all though, quite satisfactory.

Pros: The bed was comfy
Cons: The food we had was really disappointing in the restaurant! My daughter had soup which was really tasteless and watery! She couldn’t have the bread to go with it as we were told it had nuts in, ( she is allergic to nuts) My aubergine dish was quite tasteless. The chips were undercooked. The spinach and green beans were delicious!

Pros: Not much
Cons: The room was terrible. It was badly designed and very difficult to stay in. The bathroom was not only badly designed but dangerous to use. The bath was too high and almost impossible to get in and out of for a shower. There were inexplicably several completely unnecessary steps along the corridor which were difficult to manoveur a suitcase over and no staff to help bring up bags or take you to your room. The check in staff member wrote our room number so badly in our key folder that we went to the wrong room and had to go all the way back down to reception to get clarification for the room number. In the room the television didn't work properly and therr was no information about how to use the facilities. I had to guess how to call housekeeping cause although there was a card next to the phone there was no number on it. The room was designed so there was only one major blinding overhead light - no lamps or reading lights - so when one of us wanted to sleep the other had to sit in complete darkness. Add to that even in the day we had to have the blinds drawn because the windows looked out on a filthy alley with several drunkards leering up at the windows so we were always gloomy or over lit. There was no attempt to soundproof the windows and we were kept up most of the night by the constant loudspeaker from Warren street station announcing it was closed or closing or evacuating.. Plus all the police and ambulance sirens. It was all small irritations but considering how expensive this hotel was it all added up to a very poor stay. When we checked out no one even asked us how our stay was or if everything was OK.. Cause honestly they clearly didn't care.

Pros: The staff was very nice and courteous, and the property was clean. The English Breakfast was very big, and provided many options, including vegetarian options, which was nice. Check in and check out were quick and efficient.

The Goodenough provides 4* accommodation in five historic Georgian townhouses overlooking one of Bloomsburys most attractive garden squares. We blend the traditional with the modern to make the hotel a home away from home for those who wish to enjoy the best the capital has to offer. Our superb central location makes The Goodenough the perfect place to stay - we are close to the British Museum, the British Library and Kings Cross St. Pancras station home of the Eurostar. We form part of the educational charity, Goodenough Trust, and guests can take advantage of the cultural and academic events at Goodenough College. The buildings now occupied by The Goodenough on Mecklenburgh Square were designed as a suite of town houses by Joseph Kay in the early 19th century as part of one of London's most beautiful garden squares. They became a nursing home during the Second World War and were later entirely renovated by Goodenough College to provide guest and visitor accommodation. The buildings were re-opened as Goodenough Club in 2001 by Patron: Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and then rebrand to The Goodenough on Mecklenburgh Square in June 2018.

Pros: The room was perfect for a single person who does not need much space. It was very quiet and clean with en suite bath, refrigerator and kettle with coffee and tea. The continental breakfast was more than adequate for a start to a busy day of exploring the city. The location of this property close to two train stations and the Tube. It was also within walking distance of many of the sites I wanted to visit.

Cons: The stairs could put off some who don’t like using them. Coming from a strenuous walking holiday, there were not a problem for me. Having dinner at the Grand Hall nearby was like eating in a very crowded school cafeteria, which it was. Luckily I was able to take my food down to Freddie’s below where I could find seating.

Pros:
Cons: There was a mouse in my room. The night staff has been very nice and had me changing room with a lot of apologies. The hotel was almost full so I got a less nice room than what I had paid of, the staff ensuring me that I would get a nice refund by his boss the day after. I got only 10%!!! Really problems may happen, i don’t mind but at least you do the maximum to have your guest think that you do your best. That is absolutely not what happened in the morning. I felt like having been taken as a fool. And I am not talking about the breakfast where I had to wait ages to get a bowl and before I left the staff have had an argument in front of all the guests. I travel a lot and I have never been treated like this.
8.2 Excellent
Pros: Staff were great, good location clean.
Cons: Lack of restaurant/bar. My room was a pied a terre so again a bit odd but whatever
People should just be aware of it.
6.7 Good
Pros: The location. The bathroom.
Cons: The room was awkward and was connected to the hotel via an external walkway. The lock didn’t always work, couldn’t get in. The room was hot and stuffy during the day and the aircon couldn’t be altered. It was comfortable at night. The room had floor to ceiling windows on two sides at ground level, so darkness or no privacy.

Pros: A quiet oasis in the hustle and bustle of London. Magnificent 3m high windows overlooking a park. Great shower. Very comfortable
Cons: Had to ask to replace toiletries. Only bottled water on the first night

Pros: Location is great, breakfast was good. When I asked for s room change the staff were helpful and apologised and gave me a free breakfast
Cons: The room size and what was in the room was poor, I stayed at the Pullman close by for the same money and got a great room, first room I had to be moved as the room stunk of smoke. They had cleaned it but obviously did not care about the smell.

Pros: Loved the breakfast, good selection of fresh food. Didn't pre-book the breakfasts but able to sort out breakfast tokens with reception on a daily basis to suit. Friendly and helpful staff. Good location, walked down from Euston station, also just round corner from Russell Square Tube station which is on the direct Piccadilly line to the V&A and National History Museums.
Cons: The standard executive room was a trifle small for 2 people compared with the Holiday Inn in Central York where we stayed a few weeks prior, and no room safe provided (as was at York). The extractor fan in bathroom didn't appear to be working. At one point, only one functioning lift, but these were back in action relatively quickly and not affect us unduly.

Cons: Heating on though it was about 16 degrees outside. No need for it. Made it difficult to sleep and my partner threw a bit of a wobbly trying to turn off the heater thus waking me (and hopefully not others) up.

Cons: I didn't find out until I got there that the bathroom is shared with 2 other rooms. And that's it's on the third floor with no lift and narrow/steep stairs. And I didn't notice until I got to my next hotel that someone swiped my wireless hotspot (which wouldn't work in the UK anyway) and ear buds (I bought them on the plane and they sucked, so don't care). But I should be thankful they didn't take my laptop, right? Right??

Pros: The location is fine and, surprisingly, the noise from the pub wasn't too bad. The bed was comfortable, the locker worked and the room was reasonably big.
Cons: It's quite hot in the rooms (one of the people sleeping there had a fan switched on the whole night pointing at him, so he get the cooler air and the rest of us got the noise), the shower didn't work properly (no hot water would come out, and i tried everything) and the bathroom was quite messy. There doesn't seem to be enough bathrooms/toilets for so many guests. Either the socket in the room or the adapter they sell at the reception is not entirely right (would get a spark plugging and unplugging stuff), and charging 5 pounds for a towel seems a bit excessive.

Pros: The beds are really comfortable Fan in the room Great location

Pros: We were upgraded to the Clarendon from the Lancaster, so please note this review is for the CLARENDON. An excellent location in a lovely, converted old building. Our room at the Clarendon had wonderful floor to ceiling (almost) windows that we could prop open for cool evening air. Fans were provided for a bit of extra circulation which was nice. Staff (bell hop) was very helpful with our luggage and answering questions and was very friendly. He also recognized us later in the evening before we entered the hotel. Shake Shack is just an under-ten minute walk, the theater district is short cab ride away (about £7-15 depending on traffic), but the street the Clarendon is on is quite quiet. Not much traffic noise (foot or vehicle) at all which, considering we had the window open, would have been bothersome.

Pros: We received an upgrade to the Clarendon hotel (a 4 star hotel of the same chain as Lancaster Hotel) upon arrival. The room was really very big and the bed comfortable. We particularly enjoyed the large bathroom with bathtub, fresh towels and nice shower gel. The room was equipped with a not so new furniture but it was well kept. Boiler and tea were provided as well as TV, stereo and a large desk. The hotel is really in an excellent position (3 minutes by feet from the British Museum) and you can basically walk to several London's attractions. Also, it is at walking distance from two metro stations.

Pros: Location and breakfast
Cons: Pricey really for the standard of the hotel and room. Needs updating! Wasn't really a superior room two single beds put together and rubbish tv system!
7.9 Good
Pros: The hotel is in a beautiful part of London, close to both metro lines and things to see. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the price (for a city as expensive as London) is fair.
Cons: The bathrooms are separate from some of the bedrooms, meaning you have to walk down the hall to use the toilet. The hotel makes this clear even before you book, so there's nothing misleading, but a separate toilet may not be what all travelers are looking for.

Pros: Excellent location for Russel Sq & Holburn tube stations. Nice quiet location. Accommodation is clean and well presented. Staff are polite and helpful. Basically what was advertised was delivered.
Cons: Carpet a little bare at edges of room but was clean. Bed was a little hard but this is personal opinion and could suite other peoples expectations. No lounge bar facility, but could use sister hotel across the road. Communal shared (Toilet) on 3rd floor, not really what I am used to but was clearly advertised in the hotel description with two toilets provided close to room.
7.5 Good
Pros: We received an upgrade to the Clarendon hotel (a 4 star hotel of the same chain as Lancaster Hotel) upon arrival. The room was really very big and the bed comfortable. The hotel is really in an excellent position (3 minutes by feet from the British Museum) and you can basically walk to several London's attractions. Also, it is at walking distance from two metro stations.
Cons: The room was a bit dusty as well as the carpet. Also, the room was overheated and we discovered that the radiator in the bathroom had a handle broken so could not be turned off. Moreover, both the window in the bathroom and in the room could not be properly closed so I guess it terribly cold in winter. The floor was creaking under our feet and also the bed was not so stable. I am also disappointed that there are no fridges in the room. At least a water dispenser on each floor would make life easier.
5.1 Okay
Pros: Location
Cons: Noise, no toilet in the room, old windows that allow cold air through, size of bed, and overall value the money.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Good night's sleep and friendly staff. Will definately be back.
Cons: Mattress was a little uncomfy on the pull out bed as we stayed in a triple room. You could feel the springs as it was too thin.

Pros: how big the hostel is and the quiet court rooms, washing/drying facilities and the general cleanliness. All the staff were very friendly and helpful all big personalities
Cons: The Kitchen.. is not open until 1pm each day. and during the evening it is almost impossible to cook as its obviously too small for the amount of people who are staying in the hostel every night, its been time for an upgrade for a long time. This was my second stay a year apart and the same problem is still present
7.9 Good
Pros: Clean bathrooms. Surprisingly comfy mattress. Good wifi
Cons: Cell rooms are claustrophobic, no windows, no ventilation. Whole hostel has no ventilation, so it has a funny smell. Staff not so helpful.

Everything I need can be found in this hostel, such as a printer, a study room, etc. I even found a book of Inca and Maya civilization, which extremely and pleasantly surprised me!
Cons: The 4-bed room I lived is rather small---difficult to accommodate several big suitcases. Another problem is your roommate---a snorer can be a disaster! I used to choose the mix room, but the ladies' room will be my first choice in the future. It is so easy to come across a male roommate snoring, while this hardly happens among female roommates. This is not the fault of the hostel, but just the experience I got.
7.9 Good
Pros: Location, free storage room, and free breakfast incuded in my room price.
Cons: The wall is so thin. I heard people keep knocking the door of the opposite room, and toilet in the morning. The toilet is a bit small.

Pros: The reception area was pretty cool, I liked the couch and the fact it was so close to the train station (approx 10min walk)
Cons: Where to start. - staff weren’t very friendly, they weren’t horrible but they could of definitely improved on their customer service skills. - the rooms were so tiny you couldn’t stand in there, I was in a room with 7 other people and it was physically impossible for more than 3 people to stand at once. - there were no fans or aircon or any sort of ventilation in the rooms. - I got bitten by something each night, I’m assuming bed bugs as I was left with little red bites all over my body. - the en-suite was unusable unless your the size of a 10yo child - the shared showers were disgusting, not clean, water sprayed out in all different directions, only run for 30 second intervals and was COLD. There was mould all over the walls and paint peeling off the roof. - the bar and kitchen area were ok but smelt terrible and there was NO social vibe at all in the area. Was very disappointing. - the area around the hostel, was dirty, uninviting and I did not feel safe.

Cons: Unfortuantley the hotel is undergoing renovation at present although there were no sounds of this you could see it, the rooms were tired and needed painting and renovation, the reception was very old fashioned and basic. Pros: The location is fine. Also the price
Cons: The bathroom is horrible. The whole. Place feels like a factory for sleeping nd not a cool place to. Meet people. The prices at the hostle bar are super expensive.

Pros: If you're lucky with your roommates like I did, you might get the chance to make good friends and have a lot of fun. There are a lot of events and activities organized in the social areas where you can meet a lot of different people and hangout. The Generator was located really closed to the university I was attending so that was really convenient. Cheap places to eat near the university campus.
Cons: It's not convenient for long term stays. I had a trolley bag that I could thankfully store within my bunk bed drawer (it's a really nice and big drawer) + a larger bag that I had to store in the paid lockers (8£/24h*9days) downstairs. Most services are additional charges to your stay (lockers, washing machine, dryer, towel, breakfast, ...). If you don't want people to touch your stuff, remembering to always store your belongings in the drawer when you leave the room can become a chore. The facilities were smaller and more worn then they looked on the photos. The women's bathroom on the fifth floor (my floor) was closed for maintenance of the floor tiles for most of my stay.
9.1 Excellent
Pros: The hostel was very clean. The bathrooms were cleaned every few hours. There was a nice mix of travelers, young and old, people travelling in groups and lone travelers. There were also young families and babies. Lots of people ,lots of activity.
At night ,there was added security in the building.
I was very happy with the Generator Hostel.
Cons: The mornings were rough .You had to time it right to get a sink in the bathroom. Everyone seemed to need the showers at the same time. You just have to try to avoid the busy times.
5.4 Okay
Pros: Location
Cons: Upon arrival check in was fine. But after that the staff were not very friendly at all, they're all in one big friendship group from the same nationality in Southern Europe, won't name any names. The barmaid was arrogant and attended her friends more than customers. The bathroom showers were horrendous, I've served 6 years in the military and have seen much better showers in the army. The location though is pretty good, close to Euston and King's Cross station, and the vibe of the bar was good with the other patrons. The rooms were cramped and didn't have enough coat hooks for all guests.
7.9 Good
Pros: Location is the best. Cleanness is also good.
Cons:
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Love the social element of the hostel.
Cons: The beds could’ve had a curtain or something to make them slightly more private.
5.4 Okay
Pros: Location.
Cons: When we checked in we were given the wrong room number and tried to get into a room that was already occuppied by two men, this was very embarassing. Finally when we got to our room we found it to be dirty especially the floor and the fan. We expected two lockers in our room (as described on the website) but there were none.... Be careful of the locker facility as it is charged my bank card twice for using it on our last day, once when we put the luggage in £6 and then £8 to get out luggage out again!!! Hmmm I definitely would not choose to stay here again!!!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The bed extra comfy
Cons: Wish it did not rain
5.0 Okay
Pros: Location
Cons: 1. Stinks - the bar, cafeteria, social places. 2. the building itself is old and requires refurbishments inside out. 3. The price is high and not competitive with similar hostels in the city.

Pros: The situation was fine, nice area. The staff was friendly.
Cons: The breakfast was terrible, just nutella and butter sandwiches. The matress was a very thin foam layer.
5.4 Okay
Pros: The location n proximity to the london tube
Cons: The rooms stink as there isn't proper ventilation specially in the basement areas where most of the rooms are located. Beds are cramped up and not a place with people who would are claustrophobic.

Pros: Location is great.
Cons: I spent the first night with a drunk guy at the top of my bunk bed. They have these triple bunk beds and I was in the bed in the middle. The drunk guy cursed the whole night and I was afraid that the guy would puke at any time. We had a reservation for 6 nights, but we only stayed 2. We couldn't find anything for the night right after. Surprisingly, the second night was better. But we still left. From what we saw, the guests to this hostel are a mix of young travellers and local older alcoholic (or drug-addicted) people. Probably this was an isolated event, but with the population they have, It is probably that events like this can happens regularly.

Pros: The price was good.
It's close to the train station.
Cons: Avoid the breakfast at all cost! It's not worth it at all: bad coffee, terrible toast, lack of any pastry, and you have to pay extra for scramble eggs.
The location is not good neither to take the tube.

Pros: The only thing i liked about it, it is close to Russel square underground station
Cons: Stuff unfriendly, rooms are unclean with bad view and some electric power sources are not working, WiFi is not available in the rooms and i have to go down to restaurant to get a signal. Breakfast was of very low quality

Pros: Location
Cons: First room had extensive mold in bathroom. Bed linen was old and worn, hallways smelled of dampness. I have pixs which night manager was not interested in seeing and was VERY RUDE! No living person should have been put there!! Next room was ok. Breakfast was very limited and crowded and noisy. U had to pay extra £5 for eggs and bacon, usually cold.
We were told hotel chain was biggest in Europe and I’ll add WORSE in Europe. Will never book hotel on internet again because I had no recourse to get my money back!!! I will only call hotel directly and pay AFTER my stay , so if I’m not happy I can go elsewhere.
PS, hotel dining room resembled “Grade school cafeteria, hall pass was issued that you had to show to get in”

Pros: It has an excellent location, but thats it. I have been many times in London but have never had the feeling that i dont want to go back to my room to rest a bit. I knew that this is going to be an "adventure" and "different experience", but i guess i just didnt realize how bad the hotel actually is. We had a double room with a shower room inside, but i would actually go for a shared bathroom if i would have to stay in this place again - the rooms were a bit better (but still very bad condition) and didnt have this moisture smell (as it was in our room). Also the shared shower-rooms were better then in our room. I will do my best to not to return!

Pros: The only thing you could like was the reasonable location. The price was cheap but I can't say I liked that because I'd sooner have slept on a park bench to be honest and it would have been better to have paid more.

Pros: Nothing
Cons: Smell in bathroom genuinely made us sick. One bin in bathroom. No bin in room. Dust everywhere. Water leaked from ceiling in hallway because it was raining. Have video ev. Stairs to room was absolutely disgustingly filthy. Reception wouldn't ring taxi for us told us we have to stand outside and hail one down ourselves. Window wouldn't open or close properly in room one single bed out of the 2 in room frame was broken.

Cons: I´m sorry, but its not a hotel, its a bunker. If you are just looking for a place to sleep when you are either very tired or drunk, its ok i guess. But if you want to have the good London experience, just postpone the trip until you can afford a couple of hundred pounds more for a hotel.

Pros: I loved the location, it was close to where i needed to be and it was surrounded by stores, and restaurants. You were a few minutes away from the tube, and taxi cabs often drove past so you could catch one.
Cons: The hotel was only £50 a night for a single room with shared bathroom which is the cheapest around, so I wasn't expecting a 5 star stay. However, the building was old which cannot be faulted. Every single floor board creaked, the cold tap in my room had hot water meaning there was no drinking water in the room, awful to brush your teeth! The power went out after a storm, there was a leak in the hallway and in my room and when asked to clean it up, no one came. Eventually it dried into the wood floor and added to the previous water damage. One wouldn't expected a flooded room on the 2nd floor of a building. The bed was uncomfortable and unclean. There was hair on the floor from a previous guest, the only clean thing was the bed i think. They made it twice a week, and emptied the bin twice a week. The kitchen looked like it could be used by guests but it was unclear, and looked grotty. Staff weren't helpful at all, and often not at front desk. Had to sleep with earplugs in as single glazing windows, creaky floorboards, thin walls. Could hear someones TV they left on all night and every word of a conversation.
1.0 Poor
Pros: The only thing you could like was the reasonable location. The price was cheap but I can't say I liked that because I'd sooner have slept on a park bench to be honest and it would have been better to have paid more.
Cons: Absolutely disgustingly filthy. I wish I'd read reviews before booking, though I'd probably have thought they were exaggerating. I went to the McDonalds all night cafe till 1 am and I went back there before 7 am to get away from the hotel and I sat on a chair in the bathroom for the rest of the night (extremely uncomfortable but I didn't dare sleep in the bed for fear of the bedbugs that other reviewers mentioned. Just to give one example, the carpet seemed to have a large dried bloodstain and was black with filth. In retrospect, I wish I'd sat in McDonalds all night and just gone back there for my suitcase.
